I bought this to use in addition to a hawking hi gain satellite antenna, and so far I'm almost convinced. As a professional sight seer, aka truck driver, I tend to rely on truck stop and hotel wifi for all my internet needs. As I only just received this unit a few days ago, I'm still putting it through the grind. I tested it, with the hi gain antenna, and was pleased to see a plethora of new connections available form my brothers house, some of which were about a quarter mile away. While most of the signals came in much stronger(avg 2 to 3 bars), there were also a noticeable amount that showed weaker connections than my laptops internal hardware. I did check around using the stock antenna as well, and that was fairly comparable to my laptops internals. We did pit this against 3 laptops, and the results were generally better, but not absolute. Tonight is proving the opposite effect however, I'm using my laptops internals because they are holding a more steady connection than this adapter has shown today. I was able to connect to a few different providers, but the steady truck traffic has made that quite sporadic. Will continue testing and try to update this in the near future.

UPDATE: 2 years too late
Unfortunately, I didn't have much of a chance to do any followup testing of this product, I was only able to use it for a little over a week. During that time, I did use it at several truck stops and hotel hotspots. In general, it did seem to perform better than the internal antennas in my laptops did, but there were a couple of places where this completely missed the mark. Unfortunately, after about a week and a half or two of use, this was destroyed (alongside everything else I owned) in an accident.

Good product for the price

I connected through a local ISP Hotspot using a homemade cantenna from a pirouline can and a USB Belkin adapter bridged through a host computer to a router that shares the connection with the remaining PCs, that was until the adapter burnt up. Afterwards I attempted to use a D-Link adapter, though like the Belkin had a high connection rate with the cantenna, I couldn't bridge the adapter to the router on the host as the adapter would quit working. After unsuccessfully attempting to get help on the D-Ling forums, a friend of mine in Mi suggested this adapter. I already wasted about $30 on the D-Link so I thought, what would I have to loose. After I received the EnGenius adapter in the mail, I installed the driver (without the optional wireless utility feature), and the adapter not only bridged on the host and connected my router to the ISP, but I got a higher signal with it and the cantenna then I did with either the Belkin or D-Link adapters.

simply works

Initially I've decided to install only the driver and not the software. It worked right away on Windows XP SP2 and found many different networks. The average
signal strength is at least 2 bars more than on my internal laptop antenna. And surfing speeds are really good, I suppose also because of the higher transmitting power.

Later, I've installed the driver on a new laptop that already had an internal wifi antenna running on Intel Proset wireless software. However using this software I could not select the external antenna.
Therefore I had to install the software supplied with the adapter, which is recommended by Engenius anyway.

The way I use it now is: both the original Intel and the Engenius software are running.
First, I scan with the internal laptop antenna if I can connect to a network. If this does not work, I connect the external Engenius antenna via a 2 meter usb extension cable, so that I can hang the adapter in the window and run the Engenius software to find a network.

So, If you are using the Windows feature to connect to wifi, you can select more than one adapter, if you are using any other software, such as Intel Proset, you are better of installing the Engenius software to run alongside it.

Bottom line: his adapter will give you the opportunity to be online in more different locations.

not what your looking for.

I recently purchased this item, for range extension on wifi networks.
Was easy to setup etc, however the item itself does not perform as advertised.
The internal card on my laptop picks up signals better than this adapter.
I switched back and forth a few times in device manager, and each time i switched
to this card i lost networks that my internal card was reading with 1 bar.
I just purchased a different card from a seller on amazon, and it works great, showing 5 bars now
in the same exact location.
So imho you should steer clear of this one.

Simple and easy

Great item...I can see my office wireless router and actually use it! Our offices are built inside a large warehouse and the router is located in the front offices. With the built in wireless card on my laptop I could only get one bar and it was not dependable. Now I have three to four full bars and I can use my laptop anywhere in our office space and do not have to use a hard-wire connection. For the price it is a great item and simple to use.
You will notice an increase right away and I am very happy with the results.

Excellent performance and range, really useful utility

Finds and processes weaker signals than any of the other adapters I have tried. Very stable drivers and useful utility. Utility provides the unique feature of selecting signals with the same SSID by MAC address of access point, so that the strongest "linksys on channel 6" doesn't act as a jammer. Just wish the utility worked with Vista. Highly recommended.

best for long range

I got this because my roommate has this product. We can share our neighbors signal even though the neighbor's house is 50 yards away! I have 3 other wireless adapters and none can pick up a signal like this one. Not only does it get a connection, it holds it consistently.
I read one of the reviews and someone said they replaced the antenna with an even longer one and increased the range even more.
Anyways, good product, great bang for the buck.
