It wraps up the baseball-themed Game of Love series. I’m not one to give away plot details and spoil reading the book for others, so I’ll stick to highlights.
This book is longer than the previous novellas and tells the story of two couples, with each guy a member of the fictional Riptide baseball team. One is the team mascot who is forced to take on a female co-mascot. A romance blossoms along with their rivalry. The other guy is a baseball player who falls for a woman he meets through a local charity. This is a case of “opposites attract,” but everything doesn’t go smoothly.
I thought the book was very well-written, and the characters seemed real. It was hard to put down until finding out how it ended. And there were a few surprises along the way, which I liked.
For fans of the other books in the Game of Love series, this one is a must for seeing how everything turns out for the last two guys in the group. But you’ll enjoy it whether or not you’ve read any of the earlier books.
Liam York is the mascot, Fin the shark, for Riptide, the baseball team that his best friend and roommate, Slade, plays first base for. When Liam is injured while performing a stunt, Claire Devereux is brought in as Fiona, a new shark friend for Fin, who can perform more stunts while Fin recuperates and becomes Fin's romantic interest. As their romance progresses between their on-field personalities, it does so privately as well. Off-field, Liam continues to struggle with his injury and Claire faces family issues.
At the same time, Liam's roommate, first baseman Slade MacInnes is going through a lot of life changes including his baseball contract expiring, meeting his birth parents, and pursuing a relationship with Savanna Soto, coordinator for the Wishes Granted Foundation whom he met while doing children's charity work with that organization.
Both Liam and Slade come across as genuine people - people who have doubts, insecurities, etc. like the rest of us. There's none of the arrogance that sometimes accompanies well known sports figures in this story!
I loved the way Liam and Slade's lives were so well blended together, as it would be for close friends who are more like brothers. For example, when Liam was injured, Slade was at his side to help him through his initial testing and diagnosis. Conversely, when Slade is facing the prospect of meeting his birth parents for the first time, Liam is there to support Slade. As the story progresses, there are other instances when Liam and Slade are there for each other (along with other friends from the team as well) in a way that is very endearing and entertaining. They truly are as close as brothers! Savanna and Claire likewise become good friends which further blends the two stories in a natural way.
While the two stories are running parallel time-wise, towards the end they become wonderfully intertwined, not surprisingly when a lot of the biggest events happen.
I don't want to give any more of the storyline away - this is a MUST read! Fun and very romantic - times two!
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book. This is my honest review.
I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The book is well written and as it’s told from all four perspectives gives a well rounded look at these very likeable characters as they face various scenarios with heartache, humour, and a sexy edge that make for one fun romance. One couple surrounds a daredevil player with a woman who wishes she could be more thrilling as opposites attract (Slade and Savanna); the other a co-workers theme as an injured mascot finds it’s not only his characters falling for the temporary help mascot but he for the woman wearing the costume (Liam and Claire).
Definitely recommend to those looking for a sweet but sexy sports romance!
