Enchanted Adornments is a book seemingly about creating jewelry but is really just a disguise for you to travel into Cynthia Thornton's imagination where anything is possible :)
Immediately, I felt as if I was sitting in Cynthia Thornton's studio having a cup of tea while she showed me secret notes and wonderful treasures. Each page is a delight to look at because Cynthia has made a book come to life with intricate sketches, watercolor illustrations, and photos of amazing trinkets.
It's no ordinary how-to manual. Enchanted Adornments contains four different layers of books -- cultivating your creativity, jewelry fabrication techniques and tips, an imaginary story with whimsical illustrations, and projects for creating unique jewelry.
Like the tiny notes scattered throughout the book, it's the little tidbits that I find so special. Cynthia Thornton is a nurturing voice, looking over your shoulder, giving you permission to play, to make mistakes, and have fun with them.
More importantly, her tools and techniques section is extremely thoughtful. Having to cover such wide ranging mediums as resin, polymer, and metal clay in one book seems like a daunting task; however, Cynthia Thornton is an experienced artist who knows how to share with brevity the most important tips and techniques that she has learned over years of experimentation.
It's Cynthia Thornton's attention to detail that makes Enchanted Adornments more like a tapestry then paper and ink. Each page is a peek inside an artist's sketchbook with captivating watercolor designs and symbols. Cynthia's devotion to creating a complete experience for the viewer reminds me of Medieval illuminated manuscripts.
When I reached Enchanted Adornments' illustrated story, I knew this beauty was going to make its home next to some of my most beloved children's books. Cynthia was able to create lively illustrations and weave them together to create a magical story about jewelry. I will be going back again and again to enjoy the illustrated world Cynthia Thornton has imagined and made real on paper.
Enchanted Adornments is completely infused with Cynthia Thornton's generous spirit, and once you crack the book open, you'll feel her presence like a ever watchful fairy or mermaid, wanting to share in this magical thing called creativity.
The second half of the book is what makes this book special. It caught me off guard. It's a journey of inspiration.
The general instructions for working with the different mediums are in the front of the book, and the specific instructions for the different pieces of jewelry are in the body of the book. Ms. Thornton's designs are very inspirational, and although I initially skipped over the stories of how each piece came to be made, I found that they were charming and added to the beauty of her designs. The materials used are specified in enough detail that I feel confident that I could find them if I wanted to replicate a piece exactly.
I love this book for the inspiration more than anything else; there are many different techniques used that can serve as a springboard for your own designs. If I need more detailed instruction on certain skills, there are online videos and text on practically everything - I just google it. I think this is one of the best (if not THE best) books on mixed media jewelry making out there.

The information about each medium is set out in sections at the beginning, which is rather useful, but she also puts in guidance on how to inspire your designs which is welcome. After this she then moves into the lovely story of making an item for 20 different other-wordly women after meeting each one. She describes each one and then the item she designs and then how to make the item. I have already sat down with the book and read all of it, unusual for me and I'm going to keep it out and look at it regularly until I'm ready to try some of her ideas. There is also a very useful trouble shooting section at the back and pictures of other artists work.
All in all I found the whole book very inspiring and beautiful. I love every piece of her jewellery and although I hadn't intended getting that deeply into full on jewellery making, I might just have to try it.
I only purchased this book to find out about Art clay after reading a review/recommendation on a metal clay website/blog. They insisted that even though it's mixed media orientated, the information within is enough to give you the basics of the craft, and more.....
Even if mixed media isn't your thing, the contents of this book is more than enough to give you creative 'lightbulb' moments and get your juices flowing.
Plus I purchase pre owned books, this was just over £5er with postage. All the actual METAL CLAY books are at least 3 times the price. For something I may only dabble in,£15/£20 for a book is a bit much. I am SOOOO glad I got this as not only will I learn metal clay, but also a ton of other arts.
Well written, beautiful layout, lots of hints and tips. BRILLIANT
Firstly, the book takes you through the creation process from sketchbook to project. There are wonderful practical techniques such as making your own texture mats.
Secondly, the book is beautiful. A story line runs throughout and maintains the theme of the projects. Each page is adorned with lovely watercolour washes.
The overall feel of the book is of a creative journal and I just have to keep going back to read it again. Often I buy a book about jewellery making and then hand it onto someone else - but this one is a keeper.
