As an aspiring interpreter, still in college, I am learning so much about ethical behaviour in the profession. This book lays out so many different scenarios, which have actually happened to interpreters in the field, and gives you the opportunity to apply critical thinking in order to understand the most ethical way to handle each situation. We used it in one class, but I continue to use it as I gain Practicum experience in the field. There are also areas in the book that give the perspective of a working interpreter, a Deaf consumer, and helps to open up the mindset and think of things in a different way. Definitely a must have for any aspiring interpreter, or working interpreter looking to broaden their scope in the field.

I had to read Encounters with Reality: 1,001 Interpreting Scenarios for one of my college classes and I enjoyed it immensely. As the title suggests, the book contains 1001 Interpreting Scenarios. These are all things that have happened to real interpreters. Many of the scenarios just state what happened, giving you to opportunity to put thought into how you would respond in a similar situation. There are also a lot of scenarios that have both interpreter's and deaf people's opinion on how the situation should be handled. It was interesting to read the two points of view. In class we would pick a scenario and then discuss how it should be/ or should have been handled.

This is a great book with so many different scenarios that really make you think. I honestly was a little disappointed that only 100 of the 1001 scenarios had the perspectives of a Deaf consumer and an interpreter as to how to respond. The rest are just scenarios that make you think. Yes, it's great to think and ponder, but I'd really appreciate more insight on how a professional interpreter would respond and how a Deaf consumer would prefer a professional interpreter to respond. A great read nonetheless and really gets you thinking.

This book applies directly to real scenarios that interpreters have encountered. Not only does it describe each scenario from interpreters, but it has many sections with personal input. It helps interpreters, future interpreter, or anyone who is interesting in becoming an interpreter help think ethically about each situation, what to do next time a similar situation occurs, and how to handle the situation.

This is a great book to prepare for the NIC. Great variety of scenarios with some interpreter and Deaf consumer perspectives. Most scenarios don't have an interpreter's perspective though, so if you want to practice for the NIC you have to make that part up.

This book was very helpful and enlightening. I had a college course which used it but have learned to live by this book. It gives many different scenarios and allows for you to think about certain situations and how you would handle them. This is awesome because if you ever end up in that situation you can be prepared for what to do. I have gone to many workshops and a number of them used this book as well as ways to come up with "what if's" and allows for group discussion of possible outcomes. This book is great for studying and thinking about individually or even in groups where people can weigh in their own perspectives and options of what to do. Overall, fantastic book which allows for a lot of ways to be prepared for most any situation.

This book is incredibly helpful for the aspiring Interpreter. You cannot get any more real than this. After reading this book I was astonished at what I could be dealing with in the Interpreting world. These are real life situations that any Interpreter, at any time could potentially face. You will come face to face with difficult decisions you could be forced to make at any time in your career and this textbook is vital in giving you the tools to get through those situations ethnically and legally. If you are considering a career in Interpreting, or teach in an Interpreting Program, this book is an absolute must.

Love this book! The first edition and 2nd are just fabulous! If you are an interpreter this is a must have to carry around with you. It challenges your thinking and really has you analyze your role as an interpreter and the potential impact you can have on your clients and the community. What I dont understand is why Amazon sellers are charging so much for it. You can buy it off RID for less than $50 if your a member. $70 if youre not a member. You can also find it it most public or university libraries and borrow it. If a seller was charging as much as some these do on Amazon I honestly dont know if I would trust the product to be in the best shape.
