I have bought a lot of music books over the years and this one is one of my favorites. Almost every song is a joy to play and easy enough for a beginner. Most music books are either too easy, with simplistic sounding arrangements or too difficult with confusing arrangements and notation. This one hits the perfect balance for the beginner to intermediate player. The pieces are easy enough for a beginner to work through and yet have enough intricacy to keep it interesting after a piece is memorized.

There are chord markings for accompaniment. I record the chords on guitar, then play the mandolin against the taped guitar... it sounds great. Add a penny whistle in the key of D and you can play that along with the other two parts for an authentic celtic sound. (Most songs in the book are in the same key and range as a "D" penny whistle and can be played as-is.)

Mel Bay's Celtic Encyclopedia: Mandolin Edition is a pretty good book as well, but this one is better.

Enjoy,

-Kendall

This is probably still out of print when you read this but don't lose faith. I put it in my Amazon wish list where it sat for 2 years. I was browsing my Amazon account and SURPRISE - someone had a used copy in excellent condition that I immediately snatched up. So far I am finding this to be a great book for the beginner/intermediate player. It is really a shame that it is no longer in print and I wish anyone looking for a copy the best of luck. You will really like it.

This is a fantastic collection of traditional Celtic tunes for the Mandolin. Every piece includes tablature, making it easy for beginners to quickly pick up a new song. The book is well organized and contains a good number of hornpipes, Reels and Jigs. I can't reccomend it enough!
