Although the combinations comprised in this book represent only a small portion of the total combinations played in practice, they have been carefully selected from the games played in a great number of tournaments over many years. One of the aims of this book is to illustrate, in the best possible way, each of the sixteen groups under which combinations are classified. The contents of this book progress from simple to complex examples, thus fulfilling the needs of those readers who wish to assess their own playing strength and improve it. * OP 1980 Timeless Classic HB/DJ * Pages CLEAN, Binding STRONG! This is a classical book on chess combinations, very popular with budding chess players. The classification of the problems into different tactics helps in developing clarity of thought. I am happy to have obtained a copy for my sons who are learning chess.

One of the best books for sharpening tactical vision because divides problems by theme and gives hundreds of examples. Highly recommended

Dear all, this encyclopedia of chess middle games: combinations is called "Anthology of Chess Combinations" (ACC). The third edition of ACC is available from Chess Informant's web store.

This is the best combination book ever. I have three copies. Not much else to say. Just buy it to get better.

I guess the big question is "why are the classics, classics?" and also "is this book one of them?" IMO, the classic text are books that are superbly written: instructive, accurate, and have little to no rivals in their field. Encyclopedia of Chess Middlegames IS A CLASSIC - make no mistake. This book has ~ 2000 tactics problem to keep you sharp and on your feet.
So you've worked your way through Reinfeld's 1001 queen sacs? Maybe even 2 or 3 times like me? Then its time to study new material. After the second or third time going through you start to memorize the puzzles and solutions without thought... which can be good because if you have a similar position over the board you'll probably spot the winning line. But it can also be bad because you start to think "ahh, I remember this one and this, this, and that is the solution" but your brain is not actually solving the problem; you are just reciting the answer (good boy, now here's your treat!).
So why shell out the cash for this book and not just say do tactics on a web server or use another book? I've found it nice that this book groups tactical themes together, is a hardback which will withstand travel and accidental abuse, will last through the years, has a nice mixture of intermediate and advance problems, and covers a lot of material that you don't see in Reinfeld's books.
I know my opinion is biased but I believe this out of print book is well worth $75+ USD, much like Tal's Winning Chess Combinations. In conclusion, they don't make them like they used to! Pick this book up if you can and you will crush your opponents - study, study, study!!!

Probably the best book to improve your tactical acumen that I have ever purchased. Problems are pretty sophisticated and progressively more difficult.
Contains thematically linked chapters.
I am a weak expert and a lot of these are quite quite challenging.
I'm going to say the best chess book I've ever purchased. I had to search all over Seattle to buy it in the mid 80's. Good luck finding it now.

1,817 middle game positions exploring different types of combinations, with solutions. A real classic from Chess Informant that will improve your combination play if you work through the exercises. It's fun to get right to the heart of the matter.
