Editorial Reviews
From Library Journal
Historical encyclopedias abound, but this is the first major work covering historiography and historians from around the world. Some 365 scholars have contributed essays ranging in length from a paragraph to several pages. All entries include cross references to related topics and bibliographies of key works, and a fine subject index closes the work. The primary strength of this encyclopedia is its international coverage?historians from Africa, Asia, Oceania, and Central and South America are included alongside well-known European and American scholars. Historiographical trends in individual countries and regions appear alongside major schools of thought like Marxism and postmodernism. Important concepts?e.g., gender, nationalism, progress, chaos theory, and quantitative history?are also covered. Despite the occasional minor flaw?e.g., the lack of an entry for Arthur Schlesinger Jr. (the index indicates an entry, but the pagination given is for Schlesinger Sr.)?this fine work will serve students, scholars, librarians, and the general public.?Stephen L. Hupp, Urbana Univ. Lib., OH

Review
"...of great value for students...and for historians of all kinds..." -- Libraries & Culture
"The coverage is truly multicultural in scope, and all periods and countries get due attention. Certain figures or ideas are covered in other sources, but none covers as many in so convenient a reference set. Recommend for all collections supporting the study of history." -- Choice

"Whether the readers is a student, teacher, or simply one interested in the writing of history, this scholarly encyclopedia provides a wide range of information and is recommended for academic libraries. How customer reviews and ratings work
Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
