The groups are presented in vignettes that truly solidify the book as an informational resource. In a couple of minutes time one can ingest all of the information to be rather well-versed on any given radical Islamic faction. Yet, the quick portraits do not reveal a lightly researched work, but on the contrary are a testament to the rigorous work of the author in gathering often very difficult to obtain information on these groups and expertly assembling everything onto a few pages. Often, if one wants to learn about the many different facets of the Muslim Brotherhood, that person would find themselves on an hours long delve into the bowels of many corners of the internet in order to find all of the relevant information. The Encyclopedia of Militant Islam skillfully gathers and organizes this information into a resource that seems to do what was once though impossible: make sense of the chaotic and often undocumented world of violent Islam.
If one reads this book cover to cover, sometime on the way through, the reader will discover that this is not merely a straightforward reference work, but a cleverly constructed story. As the reader traces the roots, ties, funding, and reach of these Islamist groups, he soon discovers the larger truth at play: the existential threat to humankind that is militant Islam. The author carefully paints a web of evil that aptly serves as a warning to the world: beware the threat, for these groups are not one-off products of chance. Rather, they are part of a worldwide movement of violence that seeks to undermine the very foundations of the Western liberal tradition.
This book is not only intelligent and well-researched, it is timely. Given the little awareness the public has of the intricacy and vastness of militant Islam, this book should of course sit on everyone's bookshelf who is serious about taking part in a dialogue about world affairs. However, let it not sit there and gather dust, lest we be caught unprepared to deal with the preeminent threat of our time.
problem with so many facets. It is a good starting point for an exhaustive study. HGA
Can't tell Hamas from Hezbollah? Then, this book is for you. There is enough detail to inform you, but the descriptions of the various radical Islamic groups, and the distinctions among them, are brief enough that the information is easily understood.
The author has performed a very useful service for those who want to learn the background and financing of the various groups and factions that comprise this threatening movement. The included bibliography shows the depth of research that was done to compile this Encyclopedia of Militant Islam. It can be used as a quick reference, or if read in full, it gives an understanding of how extensively these groups have spread.
And don't miss the book's glossary. It gives the definition of terms we read and hear every day, but may not fully understand; such as fatwa, jihad, and others. Highly recommended.
