The truth revealed in this book is being proven by the "not helpful" votes that are so quickly showing up on the positive reviews. The contention of the book is that there are those out there trying to silence those with conflicting viewpoints. The book opens portraying the reader who may have already found himself or herself flamed on the internet for statements thought by the writer to be harmless. I've experienced it by a couple of comments to my reviews accusing my of chauvinism by distorting innocent comments I made and making them appear chauvinistic when they weren't.

This is an important book. I won't say that I agree 100% with it because I don't. But this is a abook that needs to be read by liberals and conservatives alike.

Our right to express ourselves without being viciously flamed is being threatened and this book brings this into the light. Highly recommended. You probably will have some issues with the authors, but you will still learn from this book which is forthright, informative, and often funny.

As a professor, I've become increasingly worried about attempts to silence free speech on campuses, and attempts to silence freedom of speech, thought, & expression in society in general. I believe freedom of expression is necessary for true progress==and although we may not always agree on issues, we ought to at least discuss them.

End of Discussion, tries to explain why this silencing tactic is occurring. According to Ham & Benson -- two right-leaning pundits -- we have ring leaders at the national level, modeling the behavior that they want their mobs of followers to imitate in campuses, in social media, and in society in general. And it is working, thus this increasingly common "outrage circus" happening all around us.

Ham and Benson describe the outrage process in five steps:

1. An outrage is noticed, by the outrage circus, e.g., a comment that someone makes, which is exploitable
2. "Town criers" play up the outrage
3. Victims are found & paraded around to humanize the outrage
4. The main stream media jumps in and magnifies the outrage
5. The outrage circus calls for boycotts, firings, or other kinds of compensation for these grievances

It's not funny. A similar sequence of events happened to me, and I suspect any outspoken critic of the outrage culture.

Anyway, the book contains copious examples of the outrage circus. The chapter on gun control was especially good because all the statistics show that gun ownership is at it's highest levels ever, yet gun violence has down significantly (e.g., down 70% for non-fatal crimes). However, the outrage circus has been successful at pitching a false narrative of guns and violence.

I have often seen Mary Katharine Ham on Fox News and have enjoyed her views so I wanted to review her new book(I am not all that familiar with her co-author). In the dedication of this book, the authors warn that talking about this book and the topics within is dangerous. Yes, this is the most dangerous of all my reviews. I try to keep a low profile, but around town, I have been threatened and insulted just the way this book describes, so I have lived the reality revealed in this book. The authors go through all the various ways ideas and speech are attacked and converted to New Speak by the voices of today's society. So, the crime of bribery where you take money and then do a favor in return in today's New Speak becomes two separate acts that you cannot prove are connected.
The authors invite both liberals and conservatives to read this book, hoping all will keep an open mind. That pretty much sums up what this book is about: opening minds to rational thinking. So, give this book a try. If you don't like it, give it as a gift to one of your enemies.

First off, let me say that I could have done without some of the profanity, even though it's far less prevalent than in, say, a Real Housewives reunion show. However, that is not the...wait for it...End of Discussion!! Because while I may politely object to the shock value of profanity, I'm just going to say "meh" because I am not the outrage industry, and suppressing ideas because the expression might be a teeny bit off-color is not something I, as a First Amendment-honoring writer, will do. Further, I know that the ideas contained herein are going to make the outrage industry go into an apoplexy like Al Sharpton presented with Hooked on Phonics. Wait. Is "Hooked" a "dog whistle"? Is "Phonics" a "dog whistle"? See Chapter 4 of Mary Katharine Ham's and Guy Benson's book.

MKH and Guy, as Fox (or Faux for those who pretend to be hip) News contributors, know whereof they speak when they chronicle the free-speech battle. After all, they are associated with a network that can inspire outrage in the intelligentsia and politicians faster than Joan Rivers could produce a Botox joke. La Joan, by the way, becomes a free speech heroine in Chapter 10, "The Uptight Citizens Brigade".

There are many things to appreciate about this book beyond Joan Rivers. For one, MKH and Guy don't hesitate to call out their own side for being shrill, while meticulously chronicling the Left's monopoly on being offended and shutting down discussion. To wit:

* "Microaggression," tiny words and phrases interpreted as bigoted, hateful or offensive.
