This is a shortened version. So it's an easy, quick read.
As previous posters have noted, this isn't Wylie's best writing. There's a certain stodgy, old-fashioned, fragmentary quality to it, making it almost a semi-documentary rather than a proper novel. But there's no denying the impact of specific scenes, which are horrifying & stick in the mind when you're trying to go to sleep. Like most near-future science-fiction novels, its isn't claiming, "This WILL happen" so much as "This COULD happen" -- in short, he's writing about his own times & extrapolating from that, deliberately going to extremes to make his point. It's bitter, vitriolic prophecy, not prediction: "This is where you could be going if you don't stop & reconsider what you're doing & how you're living." It's a message that remains all too timely -- highly recommended!
