Editorial Reviews

UK collection from the Grammy-winning song stylist focusing on her mid to late '70s recordings for the CTI label. Patti's debut for CTI, End of a Rainbow, was conceived after she played demos of songs she'd written (but originally never planned to record) for arranger Bill Eaton who in turn played them for his production partner percussionist Ralph MacDonald. After MacDonald let Creed Taylor hear some of the songs, Patti began recording what would become her much-acclaimed debut set for the label which featured eight original Austin compositions including the U.S. R&B charted single, 'Say You Love Me' and 'Sweet Sadie the Savior' (also recorded by Blood, Sweat & Tears). The 1976 LP (with some of New York's top session players) became a U.S. Top 40 jazz charted album and is included in it's entirety on this SoulMusic Records' compilation drawn from Patti's four years with CTI.

I LOVE PATTI AUSTIN!!!!!!!! She is one of the best in the business and she gets better every year. but, finding her early work is kinda difficult. So, I was thrilled to find this cd of 18 songs. She wrote most of the songs herself and the music behind her is amazing! "Lost in the stars" I think is my favorite track. If you are a Patti fan, you will not be dissapointed.

End of A Rainbow is the title song of her debut album on C.T.I. record label from which the album cover was taken.
5 years later she and James Ingram would sing "Baby Come To Me" Luke and Laura's theme from General Hospital.
It's NOT included here. These are the seeds of her future greatness. It showcases her angelic voice but more than that and more than any other recording it showcases her songwriting. It contains her first 2 recordings for C.T.I. End of A Rainbow and Havana Candy. The cover of Havana Candy serves as the back cover here. Speaking of covers, here she "covers" Spiral Staircase's "More Today Than Yesterday" which features the start of another trademark. Her scat singing which is in the tradition of Ella Fitzgerald. Her tribute album "For Ella" was Grammy nominated. My favorite songs she has composed are Sadie The Savior, which is similar in vain to Bill Withers' Grandma's Hands' about women whose real vocation was to be in church every Sunday morning to worship the Lord. For Baptist's like me, it meant my mother dressed us, my brothers and I & hoped we stayed clean all day. There are recurring themes or at least songs in Patti's career, "In My Life" which tells of aloneness, but says in my life you are the song. Present tense; The melody plays on, though the inspiration for the song is missing. End of A Rainbow. I know you don't know the answer, and you know neither do I. When Your heart tells you to follow a star, it's better not to ask why.
"Give It Time", and "There Is No Time" If you don't know Patti's music, this is a great introduction. If you know Patti's voice here is her heart and soul( MOSTLY) in her own words.
