I am a chocoholic who loves very dark chocolate. I have always been eager to sample new brands whenever I find one that has a rating of 75% or higher. Endangered Species Black Panther is the best I have ever tasted. Some dark chocolate over 80% is bitter or dry, but not this one. Even those in my family who normally don't like the very darkest chocolate like the smooth creamy taste of this one. I am now totally spoiled and feel deprived if I have to eat any other kind of chocolate.
In addition, a couple of years ago I decided I would no longer buy chocolate that was not "fair trade", that is chocolate that was made from beans that were harvested without exploiting children and other low-paid workers. What a delight to find that this particular fair trade product also happens to be the most delicious as well.

Just wanted to add my vote for this as the best extreme dark chocolate I've tried. It really isn't for those who are expecting sweet dark chocolate. Like those who posted 1-star reviews of "Yuk!", I made the mistake the first time of snapping off a row and chomping down on a piece... what a shock to the tastebuds! But there was -something- there, so I didn't throw it out. I simply nibbled on the rest of it, and what a difference! It was suddenly just sweet enough, with an intense, very satisfying chocolate flavor. The "extreme" in the bar's name isn't there for exaggeration! So if you want something more like a nice glass of wine to be savored slowly rather than a glass of grape juice to be chugged, give this bar a try.

Black Panther 88%
I've tried about a dozen or so different dark 72-90% chocolate bars and so far, nothing has come even close to this bar. It is rich and smooth, and not bitter at all. I've tried other 70%+ bars that were much more bitter than this. They obviously up the cocoa butter to compensate for the lack of sugar.

I HIGHLY recommended it if you enjoy other very dark chocolate. There do seem to be availability issues and I have had local stores either sporadically carry them or have older or heat damaged stock (white chalky coating). The company even sent me coupons to replace the older bars though.

Do NOT buy this if you don't like other ultra-dark chocolate. I had to bust out laughing when another review said "I dont know why there are so many good reviews for this. Some people out there must really love to punish their tastebuds. Maybe they also like black licorice and black coffee?". Actually, YES, many people DO enjoy black coffee. So if you're the type that enjoy's coffee flavored sugar or tea flavored sugar, then this is probably NOT for you.

But, if you enjoy rich non-sugary treats, then this may be a great experience. Honestly though, go buy a single bar before you invest in a whole case of chocolate you haven't tried yet.

Flavor Name: Panther, (88%) Dark Chocolate
I don’t love this chocolate as much as the dark bars from Alter Eco and Equal Exchange but it’s still a very decent chocolate bar. It doesn’t have quite as much character or as nice a melt as the Alter Eco Blackout bar or the Equal Exchange Very Dark or Panama bars, but on the other hand it is considerably cheaper. Containing almost as much protein as sugar, and providing 15% of your iron and 24% of your fiber suggested intake, it’s a good choice nutritionally. I also like the cranberries and almond bar from Endangered Species - perhaps a little more than the 88% cocoa.

It’s hard not to love Endangered Species as a company. In addition to using shade-grown, organic, Rainforest Alliance certified cacao and giving 10% of profits to conservation organizations, their facilities are 100% wind-powered and they make efforts to recycle or repurpose unused materials. Overall, I’d rate it 4/5 gold stars for quality and price and also 5/5 green stars for social and environmental impact.

The Rainforest Alliance states that their standards and practices have impacts on local communities that are equivalent to those of fair trade initiatives. There can be a huge difference in impact between buying chocolate that is fair trade certified and that which is not. On one hand you can support a sustainable business that in addition to giving workers a fair wage also helps the community in which the cacao is grown; on the other hand (think large multinational chocolate makers) the cheaper chocolate may come at the price of a very poor standard of life for workers, communities that don’t benefit, and even child slavery.

Love this chocolate, love the mission. Nothing critical to say about the product itself. One comment on this particular batch, though, is that many of my bars have bloomed on one end. Still edible - have used it to make hot cocoa.

I tried this product because I have read about the health benefits of dark chocolate, and because it is an "all natural" product, and because 10% of the profits are donated to help support species, habitat and humanity.

It is really quite good, and very rich. But you should know that the flavor is a lot different from a Hershey bar. This particular one is 88% cocoa with only 5g sugar in one-half of a 3 oz bar. The 3 oz bar is a nice size and is more chocolate than I would eat in a sitting, not that I eat a lot of chocolate anyway. It tastes something like the DARK Hershey bar WITHOUT the sugar. That could be a somewhat bitter taste to someone, especially if you are not expecting it. There are also 0 mg of sodium (salt) and 0 mg cholesterol. There is 4 % calcium and 15% iron, as well as 6 g fiber and 210 calories in one-half of a 3 oz bar. The back of the paper label tells you about the leopard and jaguar. The candy bar (if you really want to call it candy) is wrapped inside a foil wrapper. (I think of it more as a health food.) The cacao is purchased from small family-operated properties to help sustain the habitats and communities in which they exist.

I have a bar in my desk at work, inside a baggie. Ever-so-often, I schnick off a piece. Then I let it melt in my mouth. Good stuff, just a little different.
