In addition, a couple of years ago I decided I would no longer buy chocolate that was not "fair trade", that is chocolate that was made from beans that were harvested without exploiting children and other low-paid workers. What a delight to find that this particular fair trade product also happens to be the most delicious as well.
I've tried about a dozen or so different dark 72-90% chocolate bars and so far, nothing has come even close to this bar. It is rich and smooth, and not bitter at all. I've tried other 70%+ bars that were much more bitter than this. They obviously up the cocoa butter to compensate for the lack of sugar.
I HIGHLY recommended it if you enjoy other very dark chocolate. There do seem to be availability issues and I have had local stores either sporadically carry them or have older or heat damaged stock (white chalky coating). The company even sent me coupons to replace the older bars though.
Do NOT buy this if you don't like other ultra-dark chocolate. I had to bust out laughing when another review said "I dont know why there are so many good reviews for this. Some people out there must really love to punish their tastebuds. Maybe they also like black licorice and black coffee?". Actually, YES, many people DO enjoy black coffee. So if you're the type that enjoy's coffee flavored sugar or tea flavored sugar, then this is probably NOT for you.
But, if you enjoy rich non-sugary treats, then this may be a great experience. Honestly though, go buy a single bar before you invest in a whole case of chocolate you haven't tried yet.
It’s hard not to love Endangered Species as a company. In addition to using shade-grown, organic, Rainforest Alliance certified cacao and giving 10% of profits to conservation organizations, their facilities are 100% wind-powered and they make efforts to recycle or repurpose unused materials. Overall, I’d rate it 4/5 gold stars for quality and price and also 5/5 green stars for social and environmental impact.
The Rainforest Alliance states that their standards and practices have impacts on local communities that are equivalent to those of fair trade initiatives. There can be a huge difference in impact between buying chocolate that is fair trade certified and that which is not. On one hand you can support a sustainable business that in addition to giving workers a fair wage also helps the community in which the cacao is grown; on the other hand (think large multinational chocolate makers) the cheaper chocolate may come at the price of a very poor standard of life for workers, communities that don’t benefit, and even child slavery.Read more ›
This chocolate is barely sweet, but more sweetness would detract from the intense flavor, as well as raise the glycemic index that we're better off without. It's even easier on your teeth.
Although I'm giving BP 5 stars, it's really about 4.6 so as to leave room for the indescribable chocolate dream varietal Ocumare.
