Enemies Foreign And Domestic is a domestic terrorism thriller set "in the near future." The story begins on opening day of the NFL season, when bullets begin to rain down upon the upper deck of a packed football stadium. A panic stampede ensues, leading to mass casualties. The alleged sniper is found holding a smoking assault rifle, and is killed by a police marksman.
One week later, Congress bans the private possession of all semi-automatic assault rifles. Gun owners are given one week to turn in their semi-automatic rifles, or face a five year mandatory sentence.
The plot revolves around the true identity of the actual sniper. The alleged sniper killed at the scene may be a patsy, and many Americans refuse to turn in their banned weapons, leading to a civil crisis in the nation between supporters of the 2nd Amendment and a federal government trending toward tyranny.

Turning to reality and not the book, after BATF gun running to the Mexican cartels (all in the name of a good cause, gun control); IRS special scrutiny--talk about "deep vetting"--of tax exempt applicants with a conservative taint; use of private email addresses and servers by high level federal agencies to avoid public disclosure of their knowledge, decisions, or actions; an EPA agency that obscenely polluted a Western river after ignoring the warnings of a local engineer that their mining remediation work would breach the river barrier, not to mention the apparent passing of years (?!) before publicly warning Flint, Michigan residents that they and their children were being poisoned by the drinking water; Benghazi, which apparently among many other unknown machinations again involved some undisclosed purpose relating to guns or perhaps their recovery; no knock warrants on the wrong address terrorizing innocent families where it seems like almost always, the family dog is the first to go down. Permanently.... And now we appear to have the CIA and NSA wire tapping (intercepting would appear to be the more modern and more broad definition of what was done) US citizens up to and including the President and his agency heads without their knowledge or permission, and apparently by selectively leaking this information, pull down a senior government appointee (General Flynn) in what a mainstream magazine article writer calls "political assignation." "Over the top," huh?
If I had first read this book in 2003, I might have dismissed it as ridiculous. Now, I worry that someone can read this book and dismiss it as implausible or unbelievable. I wish it were so.
I am not a gun owner and I admit not appreciating some of the finer points of the weapons discussed in the book. But the story also kept me on the edge of my seat. More, please, Mr. Bracken.
This is my favorite of his historical novels I've read so far. Unless you're a brain dead liberal snowflake you'll connect with this book. ATF? CIA? FBI? NSA? Oh the Constitution doesn't apply to them. Didn't you know that. The theme of the book? Heck! It's already happening.
Very riveting. About 500 pages and I blew thru it.
If your IQ is above 2 digits you'll love this book.
“Enemies Foreign and Domestic” is the first of three novels about the down full of the United States, brought on by overly aggressive political wonks that live and work in the “Swamp”. We see this happening right before our eyes this very day.! We know who some of them are and where they work. (Or worked). They work in the FBI, CIA and any of a half dozen other government swamp holes with the power, equipment and highly trained people to cause havoc in our nation.. That’s what this book is about. Is that seeing the future or what..?? :)
If you’re a ex-military man, cop, or any person who has taken an oath to “Protect and Defend” the Constitution of the United States, or just consider yourself a true patriot of our nation, believe me, your going to want to read this book…
This would make an AMAZING TV series…
ENEMIES FOREIGN and DOMESTIC.
DOMESTIC ENEMIES, The RECONQUISTA.

Good alternative near-future novels (e.g. 1984) describe the inevitable consequences of a single event - Orwell has the UK fall to a Stalinist dictatorship that becomes impregnable through advances in surveillance technologies.
Bracken isn't George Orwell, but he's perfectly readable and his plot line matches Orwell's for rigor. His triggering event is a coup by the Washington elite & his story is driven by the response of the armed citizenry. His characters are very realistic, the weapons and tactics used are spot on, and the politics are chillingly perfect.
If the Washington elite succeeds in bringing down America's new President, something like this will follow.
This review is based on my experience of living & working in the US for many years.
The story unfolds with the murder by BATF agents of an innocent gun store proprietor. His college age daughter vows to take revenge on the killers and enlists some accomplices with varying degrees of willingness and skills to help her in her mission.
Technically sound as you would expect from an ex USN SEAL author, and a roller coaster ride of tension and intrigue. Vaguely unsatisfactory ending, but no spoilers from me.
Highly recommended.
