"Bin Ladism" as a fascist regime is described by Hitchins. With his usual aplomb, he clearly elucidates the factors that it has in common with all the fascists of our world. Examples are clear and succinct. The piece is, as always, an essay to make us think through our own beliefs.

No apologies. No softening of the truth. Hitchens paints a portrait of a man with ego but no conscience. Hitchens shows us what we are really fighting: an idea that surfaces every so many years in a different guise each time, making us think it is a new fight. We are shown what the original targets were and how Bin Laden's own hubris made him strike farther than his limited abilities could handle. I, an independent with a few left wing leanings, read this to friends who were mostly Republican conservatives. People who would normally view Hitchens as a left wing, liberal nut ball. They came away agreeing. This piece is a classic and was written on such a commonly human level that only the dangerously fanatical could disagree.

This short article is a great first step in getting to know some of the background on Osama Bin Ladin. It's not a full biography, but that's not what you pay for. Hitchens is well balanced and objective in his writing (as objective as one can be, anyway).
