Access the white light in the form of high, low, spot, flood, or spot and flood together; alternately turn on the red night vision with the push button switch. The powerful beam is up to 4X brighter than standard LED technology. The Headlamp’s LEDs provide an impressive maximum output of 200 lumens of bright white light and reach a distance of 70 meters.
The Headlamp mounts comfortably and securely on your head or hard hat with adjustable and comfortable head strap. The Headlamp pivots to direct light where you need it. PRO: Can be very bright. Adjustable brightness is very handy. I particularly like the ability to choose between spot, flood and combo. I typically use flood mode for working around camp or looking at things I am doing. I use spot for trying to look into middle distance at night.
CON: This headlamp shines a LOT of glare into your face. The entire faceplate of the the lamp is clear plastic. When turned on, this plastic refracts light down into your face. It is particularly bad when the spotlight LED is active, as this LED is very bright and is closest to the bottom of the lamp, where the light refracts into your face. The glare into the wearer's face is so bad you really can't see much, unless you hold your hand to your brow in "salute" style, to block the glare. The glare worsens as you tilt the lamp down to shine at a lower angle.
I fixed this glare problem, mostly, by masking the bottom of the lamp with electrical tape. This blocks most of the downward glare. I was careful and did a clean job, so it doesn't look too goofy. However, two stars for even needing to do this, and for the fact that unless you block the glare somehow, this light actually makes night usage very difficult. I would have hoped the Energizer design people would have noticed this problem during product testing and, you know, fixed it themselves.
What I don't like is that after a handful of uses, the headband is already showing signs of overstretch. I don't recall my previous one being fatigued so quickly.
Second, although the lamp can be adjusted/tilted, the first click is a really hard snap...which, while on your forehead, is like getting smacked in the forehead. Maybe over time it'll soften up (closes easily, though), but I try to adjust it before putting it on my head.
Third, the plastic buckle/adjuster/whatever is squarely on the back of the head and is comfortable...except if you happen to be laying on your back and decide to rest your head on the ground...a situation I found myself in while working under my truck. While I don't expect it to be pillow-like in anyway, I didn't think it would hurt so much the first time I did it.
Lastly, I wish it came in other colors. The green is okay, it's just not my kind of color.
All in all, it does what I need it to do, but I kind of like my older one a little more.
Pros: red light for at night, ability to dim on most settings, price for the lumens
Cons: spot function isn't as good as my black diamond spot headlamp (not as pricey though), the way its designed I have to wear it extremely high on my forehead to not get a glare/light on my eyebrows which is distracting at night.
Pros: price, red LED, lightweight.
Cons: face glare, light angle adjuster is cheap and will likely break.
I use this headlamp for when I run trails at night, and also for hiking/camping. The white light settings provide excellent illumination at night, and I typically use the white spot light or the white flood light for night running. The combination spot and flood light mode only really helps light up your periphery, and you drain the batteries faster, so I almost never need it. I initially thought that the light was much weaker, but I figured out that the batteries that came with the headlamp were not at full capacity, so once I swapped the 3 AAA's out, the light was much, much brighter. Additionally, I like the red light feature since it keeps your eyes dark adjusted. The face glare is very annoying and shows a lack of attention to detail by Energizer. You can cover the bottom of the large LED light with electrical tape to fix that issue. Also, the light angle adjuster is terribly cheap and will likely snap if used repeatedly. Battery life is good; I think on high (flood plus spot) you'll get up to 6 hours, and double or triple that on the lower settings (spot OR flood). Light gets very dim when batteries are low, so you will know when it's time for new batteries.
