The author LITERALLY thinks that if you think positively, good things will begin coming your way, as in somehow your 'positive energy' is an actual quantifiable force that reaches out into the universe, interacts with it, and almost magnetically attracts other positive energy things. So much so, that if you think positively, people will appear to provide you just what you need, right when you need it... like, literally. He references 'scientific' studies from this group called the Heartmath institute, which purports to have evidence of the human heart actually being another, separate intellect which the brain needs to be attuned-to through positive energy practices. Furthermore, that the heart has an energy field which extends out and interacts with the earth's magnetic fields so much so that if we all properly attuned our heartminds and our brains, we'd suffuse the planet with 'positive' energy. 0_o
Ok, so lets talk about the narrative. This book is directed, rather specifically, at white, male, middle class, middle aged middle managers. How do I know this? Because all of the success stories in the book, with the exception of a female school teacher and Joy, the female bus driver, are white middle-aged men in some semblance of middle management positions, except those who have embraced this philosophy for the longest, they, of course, are either owners or executives. Now, how do I know the ethnicity of these characters you might ask, as this book didn't reference race at all but for the carefully chosen Jose? Well, I had the privilege to listen to the audiobook read by the author. He seemed pretty intentional about giving each character a specific voice. For instance, Joy, that bus driver we talked about, sounded like his fantasy version of Queen Latifa. OF COURSE the bus driver is a sage black woman with nothing but benevolence who absolutely adores her job as a bus driver, cuz she gets to help all those downtrodden middle class white-folk! How inspiring and inclusive.
My guess as to why this was chosen as a book for us is that Gordon references god a few times, and he would ask us to be almost blindly enthusiastic about everything we value. There is no effective strategy for conflict resolution in this book, he simply says ignore, isolate, or remove those with negative 'energy'. And Gordon's philosophy has a dangerously naive take on the power of positive without recognizing why negative feelings/interactions occur, or how to address them. And, one of the most insulting things is this obtuse notion that EVERY negative event has a positive side for everyone. Though I firmly believe in the idea of seeking the positive things in your life when you're struggling and re-framing when it is beneficial, this does little to help real people with real problems actually find strategies to deal with those problems effectively.
Jon Gordon writes about positive and negative energy in this parable, The Energy Bus.
The books begins with our main character George having a rough start to his week. His children are out of control, the family dog jumps up on his suit, he remembers his car needs to go in the shop, and his wife cannot drive him to work so he has to take the #11 bus and he has a major work presentation due in two weeks and his team is in disarray. His life is filled with negative energy and he's in a downward spiral.
George learns that his car is going to be down for a bit so he winds up taking the #11 bus over the next two weeks where he learns some valuable lessons that turn his life around. During the two weeks he learns the 10 rules of the bus;
1 - You're the driver of your bus.
2 - Desire, vision, and focus move your bus in the right direction.
3 - Fuel your ride with positive energy.
4 - Invite people on your bus and share your vision for the road ahead.
5 - Don't waste energy on those who don't get on your bus.
6 - Post a sign that says, "no energy vampires allowed" on your bus.
7 - Enthusiasm attracts more passengers and energizes them during the ride.
8 - Love your passengers.
9 - Drive with purpose.
10 - Have fun and enjoy the ride.
The book is about mindset and bringing positive energy. It reminds us that we have a choice every day with our attitude and outlook. We really need to be mindful because energy is infectious and in both directions. A negative person can be a cancer in our lives and destroy a good environment. Don't let these vampires on your bus!
Amazon gives this one a 4.7 after 1,287 reviews. Goodreads gives it a 3.84 rating after 6,219 ratings and 749 reviews. This is my 3rd Jon Gordon book and he brings a good message but it's at a fairly low level and these books are but an hour to two max reading time. I was torn between a 3 or a 4 and decided on a 4 because of the positive message.
