I converted a 240V / 50A welder socket in my garage into the 14-50R configuration that matches the Tesla portable charging system. I am able to charge the batteries at 32A, according to the control panel of my Tesla 3.
I was hoping for 40A charge rate (50A in, 80% efficiency of onboard charger, yielding 40A charge to batteries), but I can only guess that requires the dedicated wiring Tesla charge module, an extra $500 option. Oh well, the 32A charge rate to the batteries results in 30 mile range added per hour, so a 7pm-7am charge period gives 12 x 30 = 360 miles range added, which exceeds the battery capacity. Very happy with this as an inexpensive charging solution.
