About the Author

Frank Watts has over forty-eight years of industrial and consultation experience as a design engineer, industrial engineer, manufacturing engineer, systems analyst, project manager, and in management. He founded his own specialist configuration management company to provide specific expertise in product release, change control, bills of material and other engineering documentation control issues.

Formally a director of engineering services, a director of operations and a director of manufacturing engineering, Watts has worked for Caterpillar, Collins Radio, Control Data, Storage Technology, UFE and Archive. He has guided the development of engineering change control processes at numerous companies and made significant contributions towards improving new product release processes, installing MRP/ERP systems and new numbering systems, as well as helping companies attain a single BOM database and guided reengineering of CM processes. He is an NDIA Certified Configuration and Data Manager, author of several magazine articles and author of the Engineering Documentation Control Handbook and CM Metrics.

Read thick books before buying PDM

So many companies jump into buying PDM or PD-whatever documentation software, hoping that their design documentation problems will just go away. (3D-CAD graphics are so much more fun.) Well, folks, the saying "Garbage in is Garbage out', absolutely holds true, here. Don't do it! Learn how good design documentation is key to all that is downstream in the company including (most importantly?) meeting customer requirements. Reading this book is an important part of the process. Read this book first. But you also need to read "Bills of Material for a Lean Enterprise" by Dave Garwood, because he takes issue with Frank Watts on some significant points. Read them cover-to-cover. When you understand both approaches to these issues, you can decide what approach is best for your company. Have a key decision maker in Operations read them. (Maybe the QA manager and/or materials manager.) Consider the books to be more business-related than engineering-related. Finally, go ahead a buy or write the PDX software/database. If you give this matter the scrutiny that it deserves, you will be maximizing your 3D-CAD graphics as the years go by.

Additional reading will be required if you have software products to manage.

This book will help to understand the critical processes and good practices in this arena. Especially for management-level and project-management. Tho most practical one I have read!!
I have been active over 40 years in all departments involved in design, mfg-engineering, manufacturing, logistics and after-sales services, in different roles as well as a Consultant.
I have seen a lot of attemps introducing PDM in industie, quite a few failed because un-awareness of good practices by management and projectmanagers. This book wil help you to get the pictures. The book is excellent to read, I have bought some books as a gift to Customers, in order to have them understand the topic before they make the decisions.

Practical Wisdom for Practicing Engineers

So many texts on engineering methods are "academic" (and I mean that in a bad way). In contrast, Frank Watts brings us an unpretentious, jargon-free book of practical insights and guidelines distilled from his own experience in industry.

The book title may throw some potential buyers off. In fact, the subject matter goes well beyond the control of "documents" as most would define the term. It covers product configuration management, design change management, parts interchangeability, part numbering, serial numbers, and a number of other inter-related aspects of product design, production and support.

The book should be read by engineering managers who want to make their lives easier!

Good reference but a little dated

Our company is currently trying to embrace a better document control strategy and this book has proven to be a good reference for many aspects of that process. However, the information is dated considering the power of ERP/MRP and CAD programs that are available today.
