Editorial Reviews

Review

We think of the quaint village with its white-clapboard church surrounding a town green and a cluster of shops as the core image of the New England colonial community. But in The New England Village Joseph S. Wood maintains that that icon was really a romantic 19th-century invention.

A scholarly study on the New England Village and how it evolved. Contrary to popular belief, most towns here were not nestled around a central green. That picturesque ideal did not come around to the nineteenth century. Wood provides an in depth look as to how the villages changed throughout the centuries. He finishes with how the idea continued to the Midwest. It is still very much alive today when new settlements form. A good read if you're looking for something in-depth.
