*The price!! Mattresses really only last like 2-6 years and getting a warrantee replacement is like pulling teeth from a live, awake and irritated Tiger (yes I have been there done that – see my report on the ripoffreport dot com about trying to get Sleepys to replace a mattress under warrantee that I spent $2000.00 on. Long story short, a tiny breastmilk stain on the mattress rendered the 2.5” body impressions invaluable. They did not warrantee replace the mattress but ended up giving me a $500 credit towards a new mattress. Big whoop.). So basically if this Brentwood innerspring mattress lasted 2-6 years it would be totally worth the money.
*It is affordable, yet still made in the USA
*It appeared to be well-built and attractive
*There were no smells whatsoever
*It is true to size
*A good mattress for a person who sleeps alone
*A good mattress for someone with no back problems
*A medium firmness mattress that is soft-as-a-cloud to lay on
*This is marketed as a firm mattress – IT IS NOT FIRM! Our last mattress was a Simmons maxipedic back protector ultra-firm. That is a firm mattress. This is a mattress you sink-in-to. If you do not want to sink-in-to a mattress because you have spinal stenosis or herniated discs – THIS IS NOT FOR YOU!
*It is difficult to return not because Amazon makes it hard, but because it does not fit in the box it came in so the onus is on you to figure out an inventive way to send it back without it getting ruined in the process (thereby invalidating the 30 day warrantee).
*The sides really don’t have any support, so if you don’t have a frame to support the sides you may roll off of it if you end up near the edge.
--------------------------Here is my story…
I really wanted to like this mattress. I am very disappointed that it was not right for my family.
I read almost all the reviews on Amazon before deciding to take the plunge, and felt that I was making a good decision. So I am now writing this review to potentially help someone else to make an educated choice. There are good things and bad things about this mattress, and I am happy to share my opinion with you Amazon shopper, so that you may decide what is best for you.
First of all, we purchased a CA king size mattress. The size was as ordered and it fit in to our bed. I read the reviews and noticed many people complained about a lack of support around the perimeter of the mattress. This was not an issue for me as our “box spring” is actually a bed frame around plywood (basically a water-bed frame set-up). So that mattress fit perfectly inside of it and came up maybe an inch or two over the wooden box sides. It looked good, there were a few loose threads, but no noticeable defects to speak of. The mattress was clean and I detected no smells whatsoever emanating from it. It unrolled as expected and did take a few days to seem to “settle” and fill out over the top of the bed frame. I thought “I can’t believe I only paid $400 for this – I am so happy!” Then I slept on it.
The first time I slept on this bed with my husband I did fine (I am 180lbs, he is 190lbs). I am a side/back sleeper with herniated discs at L4-L5 and L5-S1 with damage to my right occiput (where the neck meets the skull) and I was reasonably comfortable and awoke with my usual soreness and backache. My husband is a stomach sleeper with spinal stenosis, he had a terrible night’s sleep and awoke very stiff and in pain. Not too bad for $400 for me, not worth a cent for my husband.
The next night my husband decided that he was better off on the floor and moved out in to the living room with about six comforters under him. That night my six year old son had a nightmare and ended up in the bed with me. And then my nightmare began… One other person had reported this on her review and I am going to reiterate her complaint here. This is an awful mattress to sleep on with a child who likes to sleep close and snuggle!! The two of us combined in the same space sunk the mattress in and I awoke with disabling sharp, stabbing back pain and had soreness for the next 24 hours. Worthy of noting is that at some point I must have pushed him over and he was sandwiched in between the side of the mattress (that lacks support) and the wooden plank of the bed siderail. I should have taken a photo that morning really – the kid was sunk in and wedged in-between so tightly I can’t believe he was actually asleep being trapped like that. He awoke stuck and I had to extricate him as he could not get out on his own. The take home lesson here is: if you like to sleep close with another person – this is not the mattress for you. If you are over 240lbs, you are going to sink down in to this mattress a lot and if you have any back issues, you will definitely be in pain the next day. And finally, if you have chosen attachment parenting and co-sleep with an infant do not ever, ever sleep with your baby on this mattress!!!
We actually spent a few weeks on this mattress/or off (I slept in my daughters bed with her, and my husband slept on the floor/in the bed alternating days), before deciding to return it. And return it we did. I don’t know yet if there will be any issues with a refund. It was picked up yesterday by Amazon’s freight division. It was a real process to try and package it up as there are no CA king size mattress boxes sold – anywhere. I actually ended up using foam board posters I found at another bed seller’s storefront that were headed for the dumpster. I used those foam boards and the original Brentwood box to Frankenstein together a mattress box with duct tape. Not fun. Hopefully the freight company will get it back to Amazon without any “visible damage”. I did take photos before it was sent out to show that every effort was made to protect the mattress while being shipped back (as after it unrolls it no longer fits in the box it came in) and that it was being returned in pristine condition.
In the end, I’m sad. I really wanted to love the mattress, but there were just too many reasons to return it for us, so we did.
Thanks for reading -I hope this helps you make a good choice :)
roll off the mattress. it may be a taste for softness - and I do like soft - but this
is flimsy. and not well constructed in my opinion.
New purchasers, it's a good deal for a short term solution, 18mths, maybe 2yrs if you're sleeping on it regularly.
