I heard the Mahon Clarinet Concerto on 1.FM's Classical Channel, was impressed, and ordered the CD from AMAZON. I got a very good price and the CD arrived in four days. This is my first experience purchasing CDs on line and I am quite pleased with it.
The music is excellent. Even though both Mahon and Hook lived well into the XIX Century, the style and orchestration of their concertos is classical. The liner notes explain the music better than I can in this space, but I should point out that I was not aware of the "fashion" among English composers of using Scottish tunes in their slow movements. I have noticed a couple of examples of this by J.C. Bach in his piano concertos but I thought the idea was exclusively his, so I am grateful for this information.
Very beautiful and musically interesting are the two Duets for 2 basset horns by Mahon. The dreamy music reminds me a bit of the Trios by Mozart for basset horns and clarinet.
There is also a Sinfonia Concertante by J.C. Bach on this recording ("Concerted Symphony") and it features the clarinet. As he is one of my favorite composers, this was a welcome inclusion.
I am very happy with this recording and I am sure it will be a welcome addition to the collection of anyone passionate about the music of the classical period of the XVIII Century.Hook: Clarinet Concerto; JC Bach: Concerted Symphony; Mahon: Clarinet Concerto No. 2
