She uses example sentences that are correct and some that are incorrect to show the difference and then explains the difference.
She points out the three different levels of grammar and has no problem with the familiar, but warns against using it when applying for a job or taking a SAT or ACT test.
This is the one book we all need to improve our grammar.
With this book, you can learn English Grammar easily, yet avoid becoming too "anal" about it. I feel I have learned a lot about a dull subject in an interesting way with not too much effort. I think it's fair to say that I have learned enough never to criminally split an infinitive again!

Zu Beginn werden die grammatikalischen Bestandteile von Sätzen (Subjekt, Verb, direktes / indirektes Objekt) eingeführt. Später werden schwierigere Themen wie adverbiale Bestimmungen, Konjunktiv und Plusquamperfekt behandelt. Zum Schluss geht es um das Schreiben schöner Sätze; dazu werden die Regeln für Nebensätze, Kommata und Subjunktiv erklärt.
Zur Einführung in ein Thema gibt es immer einen Satz, welcher dann auseinander genommen wird. Dabei kann es sich um ein gutes oder um ein schlechtes Beispiel handeln. Bei den oben angeführten Grundbestandteilen von Sätzen gibt es Verfahren, um diese aufzuspüren (inklusive Grafiken). An die jeweilige Regel schließen sich weitere Beispiele an (falscher Satz, richtiger Satz und Begründung). Zum Schluss gibt es Aufgaben mit Lösung.
Für wichtige Themen gibt es Kästen (z. B. historic / historical, sit / set). Man erhält zwar einführende Hinweise für einen guten Schreibstil, Zitate und wissenschaftliches Arbeiten; grundsätzlich wird man zu diesen Themen jedoch auf die Fachliteratur verwiesen.
Das Buch richtet sich nicht an Anfänger. Es soll helfen, die Kenntnisse der englischen Sprache zu verbessern. Deshalb findet man auch oft Hinweise auf spezielle Fragen in den Aufnahmetests für amerikanische Hochschulen (SAT bzw. ACT). Die neue 2. Auflage geht auch auf das Internet ein (E-Mail oder SMS). Das Wichtigste ist, dass man sich klar ausdrücken und den Stil nach dem Gesprächspartner ausrichten soll (z. B. in einer Bewerbung formales Englisch verwenden).
Mir hat das Buch gut gefallen. Die Unklarheiten, die ich mit der englischen Sprache noch hatte (vor allem Groß- und Kleinschreibung von Überschriften) sind weit gehend beseitigt. Die diskutierten Regeln sind nicht wirklich schwieriger als Schulenglisch und die grammatikalischen Fachausdrücke kann (bzw. soll) man überlesen. Man muss bei dem Buch eben nur beachten, dass es sich nicht an Anfänger richtet, sondern der Vervollkommnung und Testvorbereitung dient.
Das es in Englischer Sprache verfasst ist, ist in keinster Weise hinderlich sondern bringt einen weiteren Pluspunkt. Ich kann es als Auffrischung und Vertiefung nur empfehlen.
