About the Author

Jacqueline Morton, launched the O&H Study Guide series with English Grammar for Students of French in 1979, and continues on as the editor of the series (Spanish, German, Russian, Italian, Latin, Japanese, Arabic, Chinese, and Gramática para estudiantes de inglés). She is a French native, has a PhD in French from Columbia University and taught French at Columbia College and Smith College. She went on to be the coordinator of French basic courses at Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan.

This book is written by a person who understands the intricacies of French and English intimately. It goes over all the core elements of the two languages, pointing out things in common, things that are similar, and things that are different. It answered questions I have had about French for almost 40 years - from the time I was a high school French student to now as a middle-aged adult learner. For example, pronouns - the author explains that indirect objects in English might not be such in French. Also, French verbs might contain an automatic preposition that in English we would have to add. I highly recommend this book for a clear, concise explanation of French grammar through the lens of native English speakers!

Recently, I decided to revive my French and picked up the latest version to refresh my grammar. It's simple, clear, and quick. My only tiny critique is sometimes I wish the French examples followed on a little closer to the English explanations. Sometimes, it seems like I'm reading quite a lot of English before I get to the French equivalents. I want to focus a little more on the French with just enough English to get the idea. Otherwise, this series remains a dependable classic and I'll probably pick up the German and Spanish editions at some point with complete confidence.

Do you really understand adverbs, pronouns, infinitives, possessive pronouns, relative pronouns, objects, transitive or intransitive verbs? People learn languages by hearing and repeating not by first memorizing grammar forms. A child does not ask their mother about the reflexive pronouns and verbs. Unfortunately to learn a language you have to understand these forms in order to understand another language. Language professors do not teach you how to speak. They teach you grammar first and then everyone gets lost and quits the class after that because they don’t understand these forms in their own native tongue. This book is an essential in learning your own language before learning French. Read it often to become familiar with English grammar so you can then convert that knowledge into knowledge of the French language.

I have a half dozen books on French Grammar and this one is my favorite. It is well organized, clear and concise. There are areas where it lacks the necessary detail, but I compliment such sections with other books. It is only 176 pages, so I can use it as my primary reference guide. It is odd, but every book I have read has introduced concepts that either were not covered in a previous book or that were not clear or properly emphasized. I therefore do no view the perceived gaps in this book as a shortcoming, but rather as a necessary attribute of any book on such a complex subject. The book is short enough that I have read it multiple times, letting the concepts really sink in. This is particularly helpful after I have worked with the material and read the same concepts in other books. So, while some people might view the concise nature of this book as a defect, I think it is actually a plus. Some books get so bogged down in detail that the really important concepts get buried and lost. I use this book primarily with "Living Language, Ultimate French."

I first came across a version of this book back in the late 90s when I was studying French at A-level, and I'm certain it helped me to transition from being 'good' at French to 'excellent' at French. I subsequently ended up doing a degree in languages.

The key to language learning is understanding how grammar works in your native tongue, which you can then apply to other languages. For many native English speakers, we know how to string a sentence together through instinct rather than analysis; this is where this book is invaluable. We instinctively know to say 'I give him the book' but know we can't say 'I give the book him'. Unless you're particularly good at grammar, you may struggle to explain that it's to do with the position of the indirect object, and that you'd need a preposition to make the second sentence work. If you're struggling to understand what I've just said, then you need this book!

Not only does this book fill in the gaps of your grammatical knowledge of English, it then shows you how it works in French.

All in all, je dirais que ce livre est essentiel pour les étudiants de la langue française ;-)

This title is brilliant to bridge the gap between the grammar terms we were taught in school (very little and on a very basic level) and the grammar terms used in all but the most basic French grammar books. It has been absolutely invaluable to demystify tenses, moods (the dreaded subjunctive!), objects and subjects, which as an intermediate learner, I needed to get to grips with.

It's already solid as a standalone grammar, but paired with something more in depth like my other favourite grammar resource, Routledge Essential French Grammar, it's a really powerful learning tool. I start with this book for a solid understanding of the basic concept, then move onto Essential French Grammar for in depth explanations and examples.

I'm currently taking my first steps in Spanish, and I've just ordered the Spanish version. Hopefully it's just as good!

Being in a French speaking country and taking French lessons I took some time to realise that the reason certain people are racing ahead in class is that they know Grammar. It's not just verbs and adjectives, do you what the Future Perfect Tense is? Indirect Object Pronouns? If these are not familiar terms then read this before you have a French lesson. My teachers are certainly surprised that we were not taught this at school, the entire French course assumes a knowledge of Grammar. It is possible to learn French without learning English Grammar but it is much harder and takes a lot longer. You might also want to look up Generative Grammar on the internet, yes, there's more.

An excellent manual and it would be cheap at twice the price.
