Thomas Nye, author of the beloved Amish Horses Series, writes Christian romance novels with a historical flare and a touch of humor.

During grade school, Thomas developed an interest in history by reading anything he could find about horses and early American history. As a teenager, he moved to an area with a large Amish population, and it was as if he had fallen into his favorite book. His love of farm life, history, and horses all came together in real-life experiences with his Amish friends, who also happen to share his Christian faith. Thomas purchased draft horses from Amish farmers in his neighborhood and set out to learn the art of working with horses in harness. After years of buying, selling, and trading workhorses with Amish farmers in his community, Thomas had many wonderful memories of those experiences. The Amish Horses Book Series is a set of novels based on those adventures. Under the Heavens (Book I) was published in December 2013. He followed with Catbird Singing (Book II) 2015, English River (Book III) 2016; his other novels include Samson and Amish Delilah 2019, and Remain True: Amana 2023.

Thomas also has two published novellas, Whispering to Horses 2015 and Amish Park 2017. He has contributed to numerous anthology books as well. His blog, amishhorses.blogspot.com has attracted worldwide attention as a source of information about Amish life and also serves as his website to keep readers informed about his current works. The blog highlights draft horses and a glimpse of Thomas' experiences on the edge of an Amish community.

Thomas and his wife, Shari, live in Eastern Iowa on an acreage her grandparents purchased in 1918. They have 5 grown children and 9 grandchildren.

I'll confess up front- Tom was my mail carrier for several years. We talked about books, found we shared some interests, and I have read each of his books with interest. Each outing surpasses the previous one.
This is the third book following Lenny, who comes to stay with his extended Amish family (his father left the Amish years ago). In this novel Lenny is living with his Uncle Noey and Aunt Ruth, and he is faced with the choice of staying, becoming Amish, and working the farm, or leaving to go back to his previous, "English" life. Both options pull him forcefully, and we don't know till the end of the book which way Lenny will go.
One thing I especially liked about this book is that much of the first third or so is about his life on the farm, working with his beloved horses. He is slowly living up to the potential his grandfather saw in him when he made him the "horse boy" in the first book. Lenny is content with his life on the farm, but eventually has to face making some hard choices. Making his decision particularly hard is his growing love for Leah, his dimpled Amish sweetheart. I found myself getting frustrated with Lenny's inability to see what mattered, until I remembered that he is only 19 or 20 in the book: to me, still a child. I'm 66 and still don't know which direction to go. Lenny has to juggle his love life, family, and religious feelings, and come to a monumental decision on his future.
The Amish folk Lenny lives among are uniformly warm, friendly, and caring. I know it was important to Tom to help readers understand the people he lives near, and I believe he has done a wonderful job. There is a lot of laughter, sadness, devotion, and genuine warmth in the book, and you'll leave it with a true feeling of affection for the plain folk who inhabit its pages.

Living among the Amish of southwestern Wisconsin, and having learned how to harness and drive a team of Amish draft horses, I was quite interested in this book, along with the two books that followed to complete the trilogy. It is a charming coming of age book combined with the challenge of deciding whether to be Amish or English. At first I was somewhat put off by the simplicity of the author's writing, but after awhile I realized that it fit right in with the plain basic life of the Amish. The story is interwoven with an assortment of family members described in detail right down to their way of living, thinking, and beliefs. The only drawback was that the author tended to over describe farm equipment and procedures. But on the whole this book and it's two following books are unforgettable.

English River is book three in Amish Horses Series by Thomas Nye.
Lenny has moved in with his aunt and uncle to help them through the harvest. Lenny's Uncle Noey has a horse farm and they have no children to help them with it. Aunt Ruth has hinted to Lenny that Uncle Noey needs help. Lenny likes being on the farm, but there is a lot of work. If he were to return to his English life in the city, he would not be working so hard.
Lenny has met Leah and they have developed a friendship. When Lenny goes back to the city to visit his parents, Leah and her sister follow. They say they are turning English to be with Lenny and his friend who went to the city earlier. When Lenny announces that he is going back to Noey and Ruth's farm and that he is becoming Amish, the three go back with him
Having not read the first two stories in this series, I found the beginning moving rather slow until I caught up. The story is one of a close knit community of people who care about each other. The part in the story that stands out for me is the struggle that Lenny goes through deciding if he wants to become Amish, with all the hard work and the rules. The part in the story that surprises me is when Lenny visits with the English minister. I was really surprised by the thoughts the minister has about the Amish.
I enjoyed reading this story and plan to series in order. This book is such a good book about caring for others and helping them. I think anyone that enjoys reading Amish stories will enjoy this story.

Beautiful tribute to the Amish way of life...

SUMMARY:
Living with his Uncle Noey and Aunt Ruth since his father left the Amish years earlier, young Lenny reaches adulthood. Having followed his coming of age story through the previous two novels in the Amish Horses Series, Lenny finally comes to a crossroads and must decide between the Amish settlement and the English ways of life. Torn between emotions, community, family and his heart, Lenny realizes he must make choices which will impact his life both now and in the future.
A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:
As book 3 in the series, I enjoyed this book at least as much as I did the previous two. With a backdrop of a simpler way of life filled with horses, laughter, sadness and love, English River was probably my favorite book yet. As a calm storyteller, author Thomas Nye pays beautiful credit to the Amish manner of living. A simple, sweet, heart-warming novel with a deeper message, I cannot help but recommend this book to many others. Hopefully, this skilled and gentle writer will have another book on the near horizon.
