Beautiful photography throughout. (Carolyn Aiken Aiken House and Gardens Blog 2017-03-01)
This book is a feast for the eyes and that is exactly what I am expecting from a book written about roses. It should capture the natural beauty and grace of roses and this book delivers. But it doesn't stop there. The content is equally fascinating and informative... I found it very interesting and educational to read in David Austin's own words how he has developed his beautiful roses to date, what his breeding goals were, and what his criteria are for a good rose that is worth releasing into commerce. For David Austin it is not only a beautiful flower that counts, but also the fragrance of the rose, the whole overall appearance of a rose bush, the disease resistance and the vigor, and the ability to re-bloom freely... Since many varieties that David Austin has bred are introduced in detail it is also a good reference book and gives you the opportunity to use it as a guide if you want to choose a David Austin rose for your own garden. All in all, I have a feeling that you will love
this wonderful book as much as I do! It would also make a lovely gift. (Organic Garden Dreams Blog 2017-03-26)
A fantastic reference book. (Flower Lady's Musing Blog 2017-02-21)
Run, run, run to the stores (or hit the internet) and buy this book. (Jim Dronenburg Washington Gardener 2017-04-01)
These flowers and their kin are displayed magnificently in The English Roses. Photographers Howard Rice, Andrew Lawson and Ron Daker have produced a gorgeous full-page (eleven-by-nine inch) image of each flower. The commentary in this large book traces the ancestral history of the English rose as well as attempts a definition of its distinctive qualities. All that's missing is fragrance, which isn't hard to imagine, given the luxuriousness of the photographs. (William Scheick Texas Gardener's Seeds 2017-06-07)
A visual treat as 400 photos of rose garden vistas and exquisite individual roses reach out to enchant. (Helen Chesnut Times Colonist 2017-07-15)

There are some photographs of roses in the garden environment and these are gorgeous, but most images are of the roses from a single bush to illustrate what the flowers of the rose looks like. In some ways, these images are misleading, because as the davidaustinroses website indicates, the colors of these roses change based on climate and season. In short, what you see is probably not going to be exactly what you get. Also, Austin prides these roses as being good garden plants, so it seems odd that images of them as garden plants are not offered more frequently.
If what you are looking for is like a visual bouquet, or if you just love looking at the English roses' flowers--and there are many who do!!--this may be a great book for you.
Other reviewers have mentioned that there isn't too much updated in terms of how to grow the roses or even the history, although the English Musk class division is either new for this edition or greatly expanded in breeding since the last one.
The book does have beautiful closeups of many, many, (I think 71) of his roses. And... there are pictures in the other sections of some of the rose bushes... but it could have been much more helpful if there were also a picture of each shrub, not just the close-up of the flower.
But not to be forgotton, other than the beautiful flowers and the missing shrubs, David Austin's history of the English roses, etc, makes for interesting and educational reading.
