I couldn't stop laughing and couldn't put it down. Engulfed is a great read full of a cast of characters that any Florida town would recognize. From a cop born again as a hippie complete with a halfway house full of unusual taco dip, to a nursing home with bodies falling everywhere,to a senator with an unusual hobby to a middle aged heroine whose life has never been so exciting, this book is a funny, fantastic, free for all of twists with its own Yoda in the form of a seagull named Sherlock Holmes. I loved it and can't wait to read it again!

Murder, mayhem and mystery all mixed up with humor. Sounds like a stretch, but that is exactly what comprises Engulfed.
The author, Kathleen Cosgrove, created a main character that goes to show that while getting older, we don't necessarily lose our sense of adventure and humor. Maggie is a quirky character that seems to attract
trouble like a magnet and is constantly finding herself stumbling into situations that will cause you to wonder how she manages to survive, while at the same time laughing at her antics.
I deducted one star for the formatting issues that caused me to have to click 4 to 8 blank pages to reach the next chapter. When Maggie is in the middle of one of her misadventures, who wants to turn that many blank pages. It wasn't enough to cause me to quit reading, just a major distraction as I couldn't wait to keep reading.

I bought this book because of the great reviews. Obviously this is one of those instances where the author had all her friends write in to give the book high marks. The plot makes no sense, the situations completely and un-entertainingly implausible, and Maggie is bumbling and dumber than a box of rocks. And I really hate it when the main character is dumb.

Maggie Finn is 50-something, visiting Florida to move her parents into a retirement village. Maggie goes to visit their new retirement village home while a body is discovered in the lake. With that fragile of a connection, we have our tale. Maggie of course feels compelled to investigate, and of course, all the bad guys try to do her harm, because, of course, she must know something. In one such instance, she is drugged with a potent designer drug which causes her to hallucinate, and we are treated to scene after scene of Maggie's ridiculous and stupid psychedelic ramblings. And of course, the police detective on the case is so enamored with Maggie that he, of course, asks her out. Really? What kind of idiot would date such a flake?

If the author stuck to one outlandish plot, then perhaps the book would have been entertaining. However, she decided to throw every silly, offbeat idea she could think of (alligators, deejays, mafia, designer drugs, Zen, politics, drag queens, etc.) into the mix and it just becomes a muddled mess. Not worth your time and money.

It was hard to follow the storyline in this book. There were a lot of editorial problems and it seemed to jump suddenly from one thing to another without clear transitions. Several times, references were made to events that I had no memory of, almost as it parts were edited out but later mention of them was left in. Very confusing, especially with all of the drug flashbacks suddenly popping up in the middle of the stuff going on in reality.

The story line was a little too complicated for my taste. The characters were absolutely delightful. Many times I actually laughed out loud at Maggie's reactions. I would have preferred less confusion and cleaner plot lines, but not sure how I would have met Rod had he not been a retired cop with a re-formed memory bank. Also, the transformation of the crabby old man that started our tale would not have been as funny had it not occurred in a typically hippy-era way! Maybe it is my age, but I too was delighted that a middle aged woman could attract the attention of men in Florida where nubile flesh is flaunted day in and day out. Could have been wishful thinking on my part, but was comforting none-the-less. I was also pleased to see a relationship developing that didn't involve immediate sex. Nice to see adults enjoying each other's company fully clothed.

I am eager for book two!!!!

This book was great ! I couldn't put it down. The main character is hit with an avalanche of Murphy's Law. If it can happen, it will happen to her. The constant attempts to drug, and or, kill her, are a constant, and know one can figure out why. The bodies are adding up, and still no answers. It's her attempt to solve crimes, and her being in the right place, but as the wrong person, that starts it all. Her hallucinations, from the drugs, are funny, as she conversed with sea gulls, and Sherlock Holmes. Ms. Cosgrove is a water I will definitely read, again, and again. Ever wanted to have fun with a mystery, here's your chance !! Grab it, and start enjoying murder, and mayhem.
