Subversive narrative on the last 20 years of US foreign policy in the Mid East

Scott Horton packs an enormous amount of detail into his narrative on the last 20-30 years of American intervention in the Middle East. Despite the large amount of information, the book is easy to read and does a great job of unpacking many twists and turns in American policy making. For those exposed to only the mainstream presentation of America’s war on terror, many things in this book will be a shock. Of course Mr Horton has his own biases, and these reveal themselves in where he chooses to start telling the many fascinating stories in his narrative and in what details he chooses not to share. He particularly doesn’t like Israel and doesn’t shed light on the many decades of terror, hostility, and war that Israelis have faced when describing Israeli policies or motivations. He doesn’t take Iranian nuclear weapons ambitions seriously. He calls Russia and China “peaceful”. He also doesn’t believe that Americans faced serious terrorism from the middle east until the 1990s, despite the assassination of RFK, the savage murder of Leon Klinghoffer, the OPEC embargo, and various airplane high jackings, bombings and other attacks orchestrated by left wing revolutionaries in collaboration with middle eastern groups and Mid East funding from the 1960s to1980s. However, no great work is without its biases. You can disagree with Mr Horton’s conclusions while still appreciating the insight into American foreign policy and the war on terror.

He doesn't so much convince you of the blood soaked, irrational, hair pulling nature of the U.S. war machine in the middle east... but lays out so many facts that one can't help but cry uncle. You submit. And submitting to reality and to the realization that human nature also applies to your leaders can be a lonely and unsettling experience. The book could've been called "Reality Check".

I'm really enjoying Enough Already so far. I learned about Scott Horton and antiwar.com from Dave Smith's Part of the Problem podcast (which I recommend highly). Horton is impressively fluent in the history of U.S. foreign policy generally and our military interventions specifically and makes a very strong case that America's wars in the Middle East have been an abject failure and should be terminated immediately. The argument (largely based on Osama Bin Laden's own words prior to 9/11) that the attacks on the U.S. were largely a RESPONSE to American interventionism in the Middle East (and in fact part of a deliberate strategy to diminish American power by damaging our credibility and bankrupting our country) is unassailable, and has been so since at least since 2007, when Lawrence Wright published "The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11" (also highly recommended -- and available on Amazon).

The problem is that our leading political parties (and the big media companies that have become subservient to them) are dominated by pro-war neocons on the Right and pro-war neo-liberals on the Left, all of whom are directly or indirectly making money or deriving political power from fighting wars that are actually terrible for our country and which undermine our security. I'm at a loss to know how to turn things around.

Sadly, it is hard to find a political home in America these days if you're anti-war. Only libertarians and *some* progressives seem to even care about ending the wars. Buying and sharing Scott Horton's book might help.

Great & Needed Overview of the GWOT & Its Folly

Scott Horton's background, as author of "Fool's Errand", head of the Libertarian Institute, Antiwar.com, and radio host who has conducted over 5,000 interviews with experts on foreign policy and political science makes him well-qualified to write "Enough Already" and call for a much-needed end to the GWOT.

The book draws a line from 1979 on through to the present day and gives a broad big picture analysis and bird's eye view of the GWOT. Furthermore, it delves into details which will even surprise some familiar with the subject matter. There are so many players and factions and Scott's writing style helps the reader more or less make sense of and keep track of who is who as they follow the action and warpath.

Towards the end of the book he discusses what the GWOT has cost America. Having the foundational understanding of the GWOT provided by the book will help Americans and the people of the world understand what is currently transpiring in America, where the economy is on steep decline, and a new "Domestic War on Terror" is being introduced.

It will also help the reader make sense of foreign affairs, as we see ongoing fighting abroad...whether its the missiles that continue to drop in Iraq or Syria by various actors, or whether its the renewed and dangerous aggression by Washington against other great powers such as Russia. It is indeed well past time to call the troops home and end the War on Terror.

This book should be required reading in our schools and for voting adults. So much detail that I plan on reading it again. In this case, I hope some of Horton’s writing becomes quickly outdated and an edited version will be necessary. It is tough to follow in parts but this is due to the author’s insane knowledge on the topics. A lot of names and places. I learned so much from Horton. His companion summary videos help to explain the book better after reading, too. His radio show and every podcast appearance are must listens. This is a book that should cross all political spectrums from the lefties who have forgotten they should hate the state and war, to the liberals who forgot they aren’t supposed to be supporting and banking on wars, to the right who shouldn’t back these wars out of ignorance and padding their pockets, too.
