From Booklist

In 2002 McFarland published Black Entertainers in African American Newspaper Articles, Volume 1: An Annotated Bibliography of the Chicago Defender, the Afro-American (Baltimore), the Los Angeles Sentinel and the New York Amsterdam News, 1910–1950, in which author Regester compiled a list of some 12,169 newspaper articles about entertainers, mainly those in the motion-picture industry. This volume surpasses its predecessor in both size and scope. The number of entries is nearly doubled (20,716), and the subjects of those entries include many “not directly related to the cinema.” The criteria used to select the Pittsburgh Courier and the California Eagle for this compilation are the same ones used in selecting source titles for volume 1, including the availability of each title on microfilm, wide circulation, high quality (based on Eugene Gordon’s 1920 survey of 50 black newspapers), and broad coverage of the entertainment industry. The format used in volume 1 is also the same: entries are arranged chronologically and include the article’s date and title (or its first few words), the newspaper title, and, if known, the author’s name and the first page number. In addition to the thousands of entries, there are essays chronicling the histories of the source titles, a brief bibliography, and a comprehensive index. This valuable guide to primary source materials belongs in all African American history as well as performing-arts reference collections. --Carolyn Mulac
