I got this book for free from the Kindle store - even so, I'm annoyed enough with my "purchase" to write a critical review.

First, the title, "Low-Fat Vegan Entrees for a Healthy Lifestyle" is misleading. There does not really seem to be a focus on "low-fat" recipes in this cookbook. For instance, the recipe for "veggie samosas" has an estimated 34.5 grams of fat per serving (the book's own estimate, not mine). The recommended daily allowance for fat is 60 grams - and that's the maximum you're supposed to eat! So, this one dish contains more than half the RDA for fat. Another recipe, "tofu and veggies in peanut sauce", has an estimated 30 grams of fat. Another recipe for "country fried potatoes" starts off by calling for a third of a cup of shortening. Really? What kind of "low-fat", "healthy" cookbook has a recipe that calls for a third of a cup of hydrogenated oil?

In almost every case, these recipes cannot be considered low-fat. To put the "low-fat" label on the cover is just plain misleading, and is possibly an attempt to jump on the bandwagon of successful low-fat vegetarian and vegan cookbooks (there are several, but this is not one of them). Without the "low-fat" part of the title, I would have been much, much less disappointed in this cookbook, because I would not have felt as though this cookbook used a bait and switch technique to get my attention. Speaking of bait and switch, the cover of this book looks almost exactly like the cover of the "Happy Herbivore" cookbook, a vegan cookbook that IS actually low-fat and is of a much higher caliber than this one. I don't think the similar covers are mere coincidence.

I bought this book when it was free yet it's not even worth it for free. I know of no low-fat recipes that require frying. Had the recipes requiring frying stated that frying is in the original recipe but the recipes have been modified for baking, that would have been acceptable. And the first recipe wasn't even a real recipe; mix these ingredients together and put them in warmed tortillas? Anyone can do that without a recipe.

This book is not worth the click; there are far better cookbooks out there.

Great recipes that appeal to even non-vegans. Liked the way the recipes are structured and the tips. I will use this book often. Some recipes I tried and loved were Veggie Fajitas; Tofu and veggies in peanut sauce; vietnamese ric noodle salad. Non-vegetarian friends loved the recipes too.

To be honest, I didn't find too many new ideas in this book, however, it probably is due to the fact that I've been a vegan for many years. I think this would be more appealing to people who are new to a vegan diet.
