**update** So this is a pretty good air purifier. Had it running almost non stop for the last week or so and it helps a lot with the cigarette smell. FYI for anyone interested in knowing, we found out we have a constitutional right to clean air, that means we have the right to breathe clean air in our home according to the constitution, so we will be taking our neighbors to a Federal court since they won't comply with our requests to smoke across the street. Only mentioning that for people who are struggling with this same issue- know your rights.
But this purifier helps a lot so far. It does work and clean the air, but I have a feeling it will depreciate after time as with most products. The self clean filter is said to only be needed to clean after 3 years I think, which is a long time, but I don't think they made that date up for people who run it constantly like we do. So I am guestimating it will be about a year before we need to either clean the filter or just buy a new unit. Which isn't too bad for $100. We'll see how well it actually continues to clean air as the months go on.
Although this product is not large enough to clean the air in the whole house - he is able to sleep very well now because he has this product in his bedroom and he can breathe again! When he has too much difficulty anywhere else in the house he just retreats to his room to get symptom relief. The plan is to purchase more or a larger one to place in every room so that the poor kid has access to every room. In the meantime - he chooses when he breathes well and when he can handle the difficulty. He just loves his kitty. And is willing to compromise in order to keep him. Thank goodness he can choose and we have this awesome product.
I love that we can clean the filter as oppose to buying new ones so the "cost" of having this is a one time deal for me - not something I have to continuously pay for.
I live on the third floor of my apartment building, so I contend with black mold, lead paint, and likely asbestos. I also have ash trees outside my window, that destroy me for about a month a year. I bought the filter at the peak of my allergies and it does a good job. I keep it in my bedroom and have it constantly running at the medium setting. I keep the UV light off because I worry about it damaging my cat's eyes. Since I got the filter, I sleep ten times better because I can breath.
It blows my old filter, a Hamilton Beach "Tru-Air" out of the water. It's worth it to get the big version. My buddy has the small version and he says he wishes he bought the big one.
