There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
it at costco, I started checking the reviews. I really wanted this to work. My needs are pretty simple. I just need
something to help clear the dust and visible particles in the air. I put this on a stool in the most dusty part of the my
living room and ran it for a week. Yes, it did clear the air of some dust but I'm very disappointed.
I did some post buyer research and I'm fairly convinced this is just a hyped up piece of junk. I found a pretty scathing
review on "Air Purifier Power Sitemap, Real Air Purifier Reviews" for an earlier model. From what I can tell, all of
their models are basically the same so this review still holds true. To summarize, first, the filter is hepa-type not a
hepa filter so it does a fairly poor job getting rid of relatively small particulates. Plus, even at high power it
doesn't do much to circulate the air especially in a a small room with furniture. The uv lamp is fairly low powered so
it's not going to help much as a germicidal filter. They recommend using this in a small space, like a closet, and where
there may be smells you want to get rid of. This unit may helpful to remove pollen but if you want to breath clean air
for your health, this does not work. For example, if you smoke, it will rid the air of the smoke particles because they
are larger but not the smaller byproducts. Also, altough this might make your air smell cleaner it's not necessarily any
cleaner. To know for sure you need to test the particulates in the air.
I went back to the manufacturer site and read the specifications because there were none in the box, or on the box. There
is nothing on their site about how many 'air changes per hour' and the ratings on the filter are confusing at best. They
just claim that it removes certain types of things from the air but no standard rating or specifications on how well. The
lack of data on their website is disturbing. Also, from what I can tell you have to replace the filter from every year,
to year and a half, even if you clean it. Plus the lamp is only designed to last 1 year but they are not clear about when
you should replace it. The lamp diminishes over time, and though it may produce visible light, it may not work
effectively. Combine that with the fact that the lamp is underpowered, it's questionable if it works at all or how often
it should be replaced. AND FOR THE KICKER, the cost of replacing the filter and lamp is about half the price of the
unit!! (at least on my model)
Personally I just wanted to get rid of the visible dust, plus I have a large down comforter that leaks (all good ones do)
and small particles of down and feathers end up all over the house. At night if you hold a flashlight in a darkened room,
you can see the dust particles in the air. After a week running this, mostly on mid level fan, I didn't really notice
much of a difference. Plus, I took the filter outside and blew it out with a high power blower and yes it did show some
dust but it wasn't anything dramatic.
So what is the best air purifier? I dunno, but after buying this one I'm not going by the reviews again since they're
mostly subjective and misleading. An air purifier is basically a fan with a filter that is supposed to drawn in air and
eliminate certain types of particles, most of which you can't see, smell or touch. Without data and specifications and
independent technical review, how can you really tell if it works? From what I've read about this company they use slick
marketing to convince users and then since nobody really knows the difference they accept that it's working fine.
Recently I saw a video that purported that you could build your own purfier for around $25. Basically you buy a high end
HVAC filter, one rated for whatever you want to remove from the air and attach it to the front of a box fan. Haven't
tried it myself but it makes sense.
I use a thin layer of loosely woven electrostatic polyester media in front of the main filter, as a pre-filter, cut to fit, that is washable in water, so vacuuming the main filter is less often. There is sufficient room ahead of the HEPA filter to add a pre-filter. Almost any kind of pre-filter will work as long as doesn't reduce the air flow too much. A/C pre-filter media cut to fit should work too.
A pre-filter is not really necessary, but I like to use one so the large HEPA filter stays cleaner. The unit is tall, suitable for floor or table use and the hand-grip on top is perfect. I've tried many different air purifiers and this one puts out a lot more clean air than most. It's also one of the quietest air cleaners even on high setting.
