*** this review is for the very similar 15-j171nr***

This laptop broke my heart. If it weren't for a terrible keyboard and trackpad, it might be the perfect laptop of the moment.

I recently needed to upgrade my late-2007 Macbook Pro on which I was running XP a good amount of the time for work. I needed a PC laptop that was going to be my main machine (every day use; grad school + web design and graphics; sometimes 8+ hours/day), and after doing the requisite research I took advantage of a nice web deal on an ENVY 15-j171nr for $779 + warranty and tax. Simply put, keyboard and trackpad aside, this machine was amazing, although I eventually had to send it back.

This machine is FAST. 18 seconds from power on to start screen; 15 seconds(!!) from pressing Enter on the password prompt to having a browser window open and loaded with content. This is due I think not so much to the amazing processor (i7-4700MQ), which is about the fastest consumer processor available at the moment, but rather to the 24G SSD, which I think is pretty much a must-have feature from here on out. The 8GB of ram is plenty; I had tons of windows open typically and never experienced a lag. My unit had a 750GB HD which is plenty big.

The screen is HD, bright and crisp. I didn't need a touchscreen (still think that is a good decision for a Win 8 laptop), so the lack of one didn't bother me, and saved me some $$. Although I'm not a gamer, I wanted a machine with better-than-average graphics, and the NVidia GT 740M did the trick nicely. The screen is fairly glossy, but no more so than others I've seen, and is fully in line with the madness of the moment about glossy screens.

I didn't realize when I purchased this computer as a gift for my boyfriend that I would be replaced. He loves this computer soo much that he carries it around with a grin on his face, while pretending I don't exist. Thank you for providing him with the love of his life and myself with some alone time.

This was purchased for me as a work machine for design/UX and some light coding (The dev's got the same machine). It has plenty of power with the i7 and our's were built to order with 16GB of ram so no issues there. Windows 8.1 is generally responsive and multi tasking with Photoshop and Visual Studio is just fine (probably all due to the ram).

The screen is also quite nice, although its a high DPI display meaning there are more pixels in an inch of the display. Windows 8 looks beautiful because it was designed for this but most program's UI look fuzzy since they aren't designed for scaling like that. Its unfortunate because it makes the great screen a bit of a pain to use (but not the fault of the machine).

Unfortunately, HP is trying to rip off the industrial design of Apple and Samsung and they're failing completely. This machine is thick and heavy for one using modern components and missing things like a DVD drive. The fan runs constantly and is quite loud which can make for a painful experience. Other laptops with similar specs can run silently why not this one? Also while the machine seems reasonably solid its made of plastic with a metallic paint that picks up fingerprints (especially on the lid). A matte black or gray might have been much nicer.

HP also seems to have skimped on the components you actually touch. The keyboard isn't great as others have mentioned. Key travel is minimal and it flexes quite a bit. The touch pad on the other hand is absolutely horrible registering phantom clicks or no clicks. In theory a single finger click is the same as a left click but that only appears to be the case on the left half of the touch pad.

have used this laptop for almost a month now from the time i bought it. i think this product is awesome.the processor is super fast as it boots faster and very efficient than my previous core i7..i have programmes like Arc GIS which i use daily, and this machine makes everything run Awesome. i have so far upgraded it to widows 8.1 64bit and is now much more super awesome. the machine fully boots within seconds. try this and i think this laptop is worth its price...customer service and attention by this seller was equally awesome and i should say i was impressed once more..i item was dispatched same day i placed the order was delivered the day that followed to me...fellow buyers, don't think twice.
