The sound samples don't really give much of a hint of the true scope of this soundtrack. I bought it because Danny Elfman composed it, and I will buy anything he does. I just love his sound and his style. Occasionally he tries to break from it and experiment with other styles/sounds and he isn't always successful (in my opinion). In this case, he succeeds by doing BOTH. There is a contemporary feel to the score (acoustic guitar riffs, some electronic percussion) and at the same time leaves the inner-Danny Elfman fiend inside me completely satisfied. I found this score to be more satisfying and varied than his recent work on "Oz The Great and Powerful" which many people adored. Give this one a chance. I saw the preview for the movie (before I knew he was going to score it) and thought it looked stupid. I still think the movie looks stupid, but at least I know that if I see it, the music won't disappoint!

Epic is an environmentally-themed animated adventure film for children, directed by Chris Wedge and loosely based on the novel `The Leaf Men and The Brave Good Bugs' by William Joyce . It follows the adventures of a young girl named Mary Katherine who, while on a visit with her eccentric scientist father, is magically shrunk down to tiny size by Tara, Queen of the Forest, who lives nearby. Entrusted with delivering an ancient prophecy regarding the queen's heir, Mary Katherine soon becomes involved in an aeons-old war between the heroic Leaf Men, who protect the forest, and the Boggans, who want to destroy it. As all these animated films these days, the film boasts an impressive voice cast, including Amanda Seyfried, Colin Farrell, Josh Hutcherson, Christoph Waltz, Aziz Ansari, Chris O'Dowd, Jason Sudeikis, and music stars Beyoncé Knowles, Pitbull and Steven Tyler.

The score for Epic is by Danny Elfman, writing his second score of 2013, and who - quite unbelievably - turned 60 years old the week the film opened in the United States. Waxing lyrical about Elfman's career, his litany of classic scores, and his milestone birthday would probably be an appropriate thing to do at this point, but instead I'm going to concentrate on the music for this film, which by and large tries - and succeeds - to live up to its name.

Featuring a large orchestra, chorus and a number of regional specialty instruments, Epic is large-scale, loud, thematic and has several moments of genuine power and beauty.

This exudes many of the standard elements of Elfman fantasy scores: the ooing chorus, the warm orchestrations. What helps this stand out is the sheer engaging force of the thematic statements, whether the brassy Leafmen statements or the massive magical eruptions in "The Selection" and "Return". Richly orchestrated, especially with the wind and piano parts, this is an outstanding album and certainly Elfman's finest since Real Steel. It comes from the same template as Oz The Great And Powerful, but while that solid score had more of a stream of consciousness effect, you'll remember the highlights of this score more vividly.

I love this soundtrack! Having seen the movie really put the music in the right context so it made sense (I had purchased it before watching the movie). Danny's albums has always been among my favorites, and this one is no different. Highly recommended for anyone who likes movie scores, particularly ones by Danny Elfman.

Danny rarely disapoints, and this effort is a fun and energetic score. You can always tell an Elfman by the sound
and the feel and this effort fits right into the mold of typical Elfman. I haven't seen the movie, but the score is pretty darn good.

Another good score from Danny. Many years ago when " Caravans" came out by Mike Batt ,A guy knocked him down for being from a Rock back ground trying to horn in to the Film Score world. It's a great score to this day. I and my 3rd. son love it. I wonder where we would be without all the great composers we now have who started out in Rock Music, like Danny and Video Games and other music genres. Like Hans , Klaus, Mancina, Revell, Giacchino, Callery,Jablonsky etc.etc.etc..

Well the movie may have been awful, but the score by Elfman, as is normally the case with his scores, is incredible. I listen to it with giddy glee.
