You cook to show your love. That’s why you use Epica’s Instant Read Digital Food Thermometer. Whether you’re cooking meats, candy, baked goods, or liquids, Epica lets you check the temp quick and get back to your friends and family. We designed our digital thermometer with food-grade stainless steel, 100% water-proof and BPA free.
97% of kitchen thermometers take 5-7 seconds for an accurate reading. You want your kitchen tools to be an extension of yourself. In less than two seconds, this amazingly precise device will display your food’s temperature clearly. So you can move on to other things.
To be the best, you’ve got to perform under pressure. Our Epica is waterproof, shock resistant, and can be used anywhere—from your BBQ’d meat to your stovetop soups—without breaking a sweat.
Some digital displays are hard to see in the light of day. And don’t even bother trying to get an accurate measurement from analogue thermometers. We went with a crystal-clear digital backlit reading, because we know you don’t want to have to give your thermometer a second glance.
Epica is a small NYC company obsessed with comfort and technology. We concentrate taking what works, improving it, and giving you something better.
Imagine knowing you’re cooking the meat just right. Or that your baking is set to go off perfectly. Our thermometer provides temperature memory features that aid in multi-dish cooking as well as an auto-shutoff to save your battery.

We've found from experience that thermometers like this rarely work for much more then a year. I bought this one based on the fact that others who have bought them seem to be having better luck then buyers of competing units.
Epica claims "dishwasher safe to 190°F." None of the other digital thermometers that we've owned were capable of withstanding sink immersion, let along dishwasher conditions. It does seem well-sealed, but it is so easy to wash by hand that I doubt we'll ever put it in the dishwasher. The claim that it is dishwasher safe, also suggests to me that the Epica's electronics might be able to withstand marginally more heat than competing units when using it over an outdoor grill (although the temperature range of the Thermoworks RT600C does extend higher).
The sheath serves as a handle extension to keep your hand further from the heat. That's a useful function and it snaps on securely. Nevertheless, when grilling outside, I think it would be wise to pull the meat to the edge of the grill before gaging its temperature. That way, you stand less chance of frying the electronics in the rising thermals.
Epica also claims, "fast readout: 5 to 6 seconds." That may be true under laboratory conditions, but it seems more like 8-9 seconds in practice. However, none of the others we've owned were any faster. So, that is not cause for rejection in my opinion.
Conveniently, the battery door screw is retained in the door when the door is removed (you won't have to retrieve it from under the refrigerator).
Others we've owned include the Taylor 806E4L, the Taylor 9847, and the Taylor 9840.
America's Test Kitchen recommended the Thermoworks RT600C as its #2 choice (its #1 choice is the Thermoworks Thermopen priced about $100). I was shopping for an RT600C when I spotted this one. I opted for this one after comparing buyer reviews.
I like it. If we get two years out of it, I'll be a happy camper! But all things eventually fail. Whenever this one does, I'll come back and update this review.
12/23/17 UPDATE: I have nothing but good to add to my review. Our Epica is still working fine. I've replaced the battery a couple of times.
We use it about four times a week (taking many readings each time). Though the manufacturer claims it will withstand a dishwasher, we've not exposed it to that, nor have we submerged it
The thermometer is accurate enough being in line with the temperature readings of my other thermometers. This is also one of the faster cheap thermometers I've owned. Its not instant, but its pretty close. It will give you a good accurate idea of temperature within a second or two while I've seen other cheap models take many seconds to count up on the temps and level out.
If doing cooking with very specific temperature reading needs maybe invest in a more expensive product, but if you just want an extra thermometer or even just a good thermometer for everyday use, this is a great deal.
The probe part is quite a bit thinner than the ones I had been using, making it better for what you are cooking. I didn't like how my older ones left these big holes all over the turkey, or roast, or whatever it was I was trying to read a temp on at the moment. It looked ugly, and it allowed the juices to run out of the meat. Not good unless you want a dry dinner and are prepared to make gallons of gravy.
The plastic this is made out of feels and looks a bit cheap though. Almost as if it could crack or break easily, very thin plastic. That alone makes me doubt the longevity of this product. I feel for the price this should look and feel like it is of better quality, instead of something you could pickup at the dollar store (really). But I needed a new one, and decided to try one out that had good reviews, and the two I had were broken.
When I turned this on it immediately gave me the room temperature,...I wasn't expecting that. And the numbers on the display were easy to read too. :) Then I read the temperature from a cup of hot water, then tried cold water. The response time was pretty quick. I really do like the response time of this thermometer, so much faster than what I have used over the years. Also seems to be very accurate as well.
I don't know how well it does as far as being water resistant. Have not tested that out yet. When I clean it I will just be using a soapy dishrag or scrubber sponge along with a quick rinse and wipe. Even though this says it is dishwasher safe, I don't think I would put it into a dishwasher. Since I am the dishwasher I can't test this out anyways. But one thing to note, water resistant is not quite the same as water proof.
Will update my review to reflect on quality and longevity after having used this for awhile.
