Take temperatures on the fly with a response time that's second to none. Whether you're cooking at home or working in a professional kitchen or lab, the Epica delivers not just the speed, but also the accuracy, durability and convenience you require.
Lightning Fast Readouts
The exceptionally fine gauge of the stainless steel probe means you can get results in as little as 5 seconds, saving you time, while its generous length keeps your hands at a safe distance from hot meats or liquids. An easy-to-read LCD panel displays your choice of Fahrenheit or Centigrade. The Epica's range is from -58° to 392°F (-50° to 200°C), and it's accurate to within 1.8° between -3.8° and 247.8°F (1° between -19.9° and 119.9°C).
Min./Max. Temperature Memory
The Epica thermometer can also record and display the highest and lowest temperature sensed during the current session. This smart feature lets you test whether a consistent temperature is being maintained in deep-frying oil, poaching liquids, ovens, dishwashers and refrigerators.
10 Minute Auto Shutoff
No need to worry that you'll accidentally drain the battery by forgetting to turn the thermometer off before putting it away. The Epica will power down after 10 minutes of inactivity.
Compact and Durable
The handy pocket size lets you carry the Epica anywhere, so it's a great choice for a picnic or back yard barbeque. Made of high-density, food-grade plastic, its shaft has no joints where it could break or allow microbes to lodge. Rubberized control switches and a tough LCD panel complete this rugged construction. It has an international water resistance rating of IP65, making it safe to go in the dishwasher (with water up to 190°F).

or not. It does have a rather small window for Centigrade or Fahrenheit readout which could be a bit larger, but works for me nicely & the price is right. I was not given this as a sample to review as some other reviewers have noted: I bought it and I might add, the Thermoworks thermometers cost nearly $90+, so on my budget this one is fine for my uses. I don't see any issues with keeping it clean if you take care of it properly. The sheath is nice for storage and the battery is still going strong since 12/25/12. Radio shack carries most of these small kitchen tool type batteries...some people are just never happy but don't want to spend money for what they perceive as a perfect product.
There is really nothing wrong with this thermometer for home use. At $19 it's a steal.
We've found from experience that thermometers like this rarely work for much more then a year. I bought this one based on the fact that others who have bought them seem to be having better luck then buyers of competing units.
Epica claims "dishwasher safe to 190°F." None of the other digital thermometers that we've owned were capable of withstanding sink immersion, let along dishwasher conditions. It does seem well-sealed, but it is so easy to wash by hand that I doubt we'll ever put it in the dishwasher. The claim that it is dishwasher safe, also suggests to me that the Epica's electronics might be able to withstand marginally more heat than competing units when using it over an outdoor grill (although the temperature range of the Thermoworks RT600C does extend higher).
The sheath serves as a handle extension to keep your hand further from the heat. That's a useful function and it snaps on securely. Nevertheless, when grilling outside, I think it would be wise to pull the meat to the edge of the grill before gaging its temperature. That way, you stand less chance of frying the electronics in the rising thermals.
Epica also claims, "fast readout: 5 to 6 seconds." That may be true under laboratory conditions, but it seems more like 8-9 seconds in practice. However, none of the others we've owned were any faster. So, that is not cause for rejection in my opinion.
Conveniently, the battery door screw is retained in the door when the door is removed (you won't have to retrieve it from under the refrigerator).
Others we've owned include the Taylor 806E4L, the Taylor 9847, and the Taylor 9840.
America's Test Kitchen recommended the Thermoworks RT600C as its #2 choice (its #1 choice is the Thermoworks Thermopen priced about $100). I was shopping for an RT600C when I spotted this one. I opted for this one after comparing buyer reviews.
I like it. If we get two years out of it, I'll be a happy camper! But all things eventually fail. Whenever this one does, I'll come back and update this review.
The probe part is quite a bit thinner than the ones I had been using, making it better for what you are cooking. I didn't like how my older ones left these big holes all over the turkey, or roast, or whatever it was I was trying to read a temp on at the moment. It looked ugly, and it allowed the juices to run out of the meat. Not good unless you want a dry dinner and are prepared to make gallons of gravy.
The plastic this is made out of feels and looks a bit cheap though. Almost as if it could crack or break easily, very thin plastic. That alone makes me doubt the longevity of this product. I feel for the price this should look and feel like it is of better quality, instead of something you could pickup at the dollar store (really). But I needed a new one, and decided to try one out that had good reviews, and the two I had were broken.
When I turned this on it immediately gave me the room temperature,...I wasn't expecting that. And the numbers on the display were easy to read too. :) Then I read the temperature from a cup of hot water, then tried cold water. The response time was pretty quick. I really do like the response time of this thermometer, so much faster than what I have used over the years. Also seems to be very accurate as well.
I don't know how well it does as far as being water resistant. Have not tested that out yet. When I clean it I will just be using a soapy dishrag or scrubber sponge along with a quick rinse and wipe. Even though this says it is dishwasher safe, I don't think I would put it into a dishwasher. Since I am the dishwasher I can't test this out anyways. But one thing to note, water resistant is not quite the same as water proof.
Will update my review to reflect on quality and longevity after having used this for awhile.
