Design from the heart
Epicurean understands the relationship between the products we manufacture and the environment we all live in. Epicurean is dedicated to creating long-lasting products that are manufactured with sustainable manufacturing practices and made from environmentally conscientious materials like recycled paper, plastic, and FSC certified papers. Epicurean products are fabricated using materials that gain their natural look and texture from the organic contents that comprise them. Each color is composed of a set of fiber sources layered together and pressed along with a food safe resin to form a sheet that has unequaled food preparation properties.
In 2003 Epicurean was founded by custom skate park manufacturer TrueRide as a way to repurpose excess skating surface material used by the company. The founders of TrueRide knew of the history of the surface material in commercial kitchens, so creating a line of home food prep surfaces from scrap was as natural as, well, skating on it. They knew the wood fiber composite used in skate park ramps was durable, non-porous, and dishwasher safe. It had been used in commercial kitchens for years. TrueRide skate parks last for years outdoors with extensive abuse from both weather and skaters, so you can be sure your Epicurean product can handle even the hardest working kitchen. Today, Epicurean cutting boards, kitchen tools, and utensils are at the center of everyday life for both casual cooks and seasoned gourmets. Our signature products are still made from the same natural, organic composite that made Epicurean a household name.

Epicurean cutting boards are a practical and distinctive improvement from poly, glass and wood cutting boards. They have all of the best qualities and none of the bad-in one highly functional surface. Every design is thoughtfully detailed for functionality in use, clean up and storage. All Epicurean Cutting boards are designed to fit in the dishwasher and many of our boards are NSF® approved, so that you can be assured that they will be easy to clean and will not harbor bacteria. Cutting on Epicurean boards will not dull your knives because the surface will score slightly, which helps it protect your knife's edge. These boards are made with a non-porous wood fiber composite from trees harvested under guidelines of the North America Sustainable Forestry Standards. Epicurean Cutting Surfaces® resist staining and cracking, and are heat resistant up to 350°. Manufactured in the USA . Reversible, this board is designed with a juice trough on one side and a flat side surface on the other side. This board measures 18 inches by 13 inches by 3/8 inches thick, with a cascade effect of color, natural with slate.
Epicurean cutting surfaces not only add a sleek look to contemporary kitchens but perform with commercial-grade sturdiness. This 18-by-13-inch board in a natural brown finish is from the Gourmet series, one of three lines produced by Epicurean. The middle line in terms of thickness, Gourmet cutting boards measure 3/8-inch thick. This particular model is formed with a slate-colored (black) core that shows through at the juice groove cut around the perimeter. While the ends of the board are perfectly straight, the longer edges curve slightly. A hole in the corner allows hanging.
Epicurean makes its products in the USA of Richlite, a natural compressed wood-fiber laminate made from sustainable harvested trees. Many countertops now in contemporary kitchens are made from Richlite. The multi-functional surface won't dull knives; is heat-resistant to 350 degrees F, which means hot pans can be place on it without leaving a brown ring; requires no oiling; and is dishwasher-safe and approved by the National Safety Foundation (NSF). Both the top and bottom surfaces may be used for cutting meat, chopping onions, slicing bread, and more-the natural finish will darken with use. The Epicurean cutting surface makes a great gift for the home chef. --Ann Bieri

For starters, upon opening, it looked small. I deliberated on line between one that was 19.5" by 15" and this one which was 20" by 15". Upon pulling out my tape measure, I found that it was not 20 inches but 19.5. Usually these types of mistakes are the result of posting the product listing incorrectly. But as you'll see from the attached photo, the product label listed as 20 inches. Come on folks, if you're marketing a high-end cutting board, at least get your measurements right. It's a lousy 1/2", I'll survive, but it sets a bad tone.
Next, I noticed a bad smell - partly like fish, partly like medicine. Mmmm mmmm. Regardless, I always wash all new dishware so I washed this with warm soapy water. Unfortunately the smell didn't go away. But again, I'm sure it will eventually so this will be a minor issue in the long run.
As for the positives, the weight and sturdiness are great, not too light but not overly bulky. It has a very solid feel to it. My knives finished their cuts nicely on it. It also washes up nicely and drys off quickly, both very nice features.
All in all, it's a good board I believe. Time will tell but it has the look of a quality product.
It has no stains on it, though I suppose we don't really cut anything on it that would stain it, but I thought it worth mentioning that it hasn't discolored at all. It is a bit of a hassle to store it in our cupboards so we leave it out all the time, propped up on our counter. When we first got it I washed it a few times in the dishwasher but it does take up quite a bit of space so now we just give it a quick wash in the sink, easy breezy.
It still is a handsome cutting board even with those meat cleaver hacks and we'll continue to use it.
**UPDATE** Well, when I used the meat cleaver to cut apart 50 lbs of turkey necks with this cutting board, it survived. The same can't be said when my husband helped me out by hacking apart 30 lbs of turkey necks for our dogs' raw diet... he can swing the cleaver a lot harder than I can to cut through a turkey neck in one swing. The cutting board has met its end, the top layer has been chopped and marked up enough that it has peeled up, revealing a composite-type material underneath the pretty exterior. We'll continue to use this cutting board for raw turkey necks but we had to get a new cutting board for other tasks. So, to make a long story short, don't bring a meat cleaver down hard repeatedly upon this Epicurean cutting board. Yes, we should have known better. :)
Here's a wood-based cutting board you can put in the dishwasher. It's a reasonably "fast" cutting surface, and it's got a flat side for prepping things to slide off the side of the board, and a grooved side to catch carving juices.
Will it guarantee you won't get sick, ever? No. It won't wash your car or pick up the kids from soccer practice either. But it's a nice cutting board.
They are very smooth, so you might need to put some kind of mat underneath them to keep them from moving around if you're kneading dough or something, but other than that it hasn't been an issue. Highly recommend, well worth the price!
