Product Description

Epiphone's new ES-339 Semi-Hollowbody electric guitar combines the best of both worlds - the classic tone of a semi-hollowbody guitar, in a package the size of a Les Paul.

From the Manufacturer

Epiphone ES-339 PRO

Classic Shape and Bell-like Tone of the ES Series with Reduced Body Dimensions

Epiphone introduces the ES-339 PRO: a new instrument with roots firmly planted in the classic era when Epiphone's Kalamazoo factory was producing rock's most legendary instruments. Featuring a reduced size ES-style body with Alnico Classic PRO humbucker pickups, the new ES-339 PRO semi-hollowbody from Epiphone turns back the clock while breaking new ground in sound and style.

The Birth of a Legend

First introduced in the late '50s, the ES series became an instant rock classic, bringing the feel and look of an archtop to a generation of players who had grown up playing solid body guitars like the Les Paul. The ES-335, the first in the semi-hollow body series, was an instant success. But for some players who were used to smaller solid body guitars, the ES-335 felt too bulky to play on stage. The new ES-339 PRO is the perfect remedy, featuring smaller body dimensions while still retaining the bell-like tone the ES series is famous for.

Classic Construction

The Epiphone ES-339 PRO features a reduced size laminated maple body with a solid center block, much like original ES-style classics. The mahogany SlimTaper "D" profile 24.75" scale neck has 22 medium jumbo frets and is hand-set and glued with a mortise and tenon neck joint with Titebond glue. The 12" radius neck features a rosewood fingerboard with pearloid inlays and a 1.68" nut. Single-ply cream binding on the fingerboard and body completes the classic look. The ES-339 PRO comes in four superb color finishes: Cherry, Ebony, Natural and Vintage Sunburst.

Epiphone Barrier-Breaking Electronics

The new Epiphone ES-339 PRO's Alnico Classic PRO humbucker pickups provide a huge variety of sound choices for the modern guitarist. For those who are used to carrying two guitars to gigs, the ES-339 PRO will solve that problem once and for all. Now, you can play any gig and any style with just one guitar--the Epiphone ES-339 PRO.

The ES-339 PRO features Alnico Classic PRO humbuckers in both the neck position and bridge position providing an infinite variety of tones thanks to the 3-way pickup selector which also features a push/pull coil tap.

The two volume pots feature an easy-touch push/pull coil tap, making for smooth transitions back and forth between single coil and classic humbucker sounds. The all-metal heavy duty Epiphone 1/4" output jack gives you a lifetime of worry-free use.

Epiphone Hardware You Can Trust

The ES-339 PRO features rock-solid hardware including Epiphone's LockTone Tune-o-matic bridge and LockTone Stopbar tailpiece. The ES-339 PRO has all nickel hardware along with Grover 14:1 ratio vintage style machine heads with tombstone buttons.

About Epiphone

Epiphone is one of American's oldest and most revered instrument makers and since 1873, Epiphone has made instruments for every style of popular music. The name evokes both history and the spirit of invention. Epiphone has been an audible presence in every great musical era from the mandolin craze of the early 1900s to jazz age guitars of the 1920s. From swing-era archtops through post-war pop, jazz, R&B, and early rock n' roll. From the "British Invasion" to heavy metal, punk, grunge, and thrash. And now, in the 21st century, new Epiphone technical breakthroughs such as the ProBucker pickup, series parallel switching, built-in KillSwitch pots, the Shadow NanoFlex and NanoMag pickup systems, and premier acoustic/electric guitars with the eSonic preamp have brought the historic name to a new generation.

I'm mostly an acoustic player, but I wanted one electric, and I wanted a hollow or semi-hollow body. I looked at the Epi Casino, but I didn't really like either the size or the price. The ES339 was the size I wanted, and the coil-splitting feature sounded interesting.

It came well-packed and undamaged. Initial inspection revealed no significant flaws; though its a tad messy around the f-holes the assembly and finish quality were more than acceptable, especially for the modest price.

It was in good shape to play out of the box, though I'm sure a professional setup would improve it. But the action is good, the neck is very good, and its dead easy to play.

The tone is really nice; it has a depth and richness that's almost acoustic, which I guess makes sense. There's a lot of variation available between the neck pickup, the bridge pickup and both pickups, so versatility is a plus, and it sounds good both played softly and pounded on.

I didn't find the coil-splitting all that useful; the single-coil sound is less Strat-like than just thin. Nice to have the option, though, and others might like it.

One nice side benefit: you can practice with it unplugged and still get enough sound to hear how you're doing and enjoy yourself without disturbing your SO.

A second nice side benefit: I got mine in the natural finish, and its really good-looking: I have 5 or 6 guitars sitting around my office/music room, and when visitors come over this is almost always the first one they're drawn to, ooh and ah over, and pick up. I have a very nice, fairly expensive acoutic that doesn't get nearly the attention.

If you're a serious electric guitarist you'd probably do better to get a more expensive, higher-quality instrument, maybe a Casino, but if, like me, you want a nice electric that won't break the bank for those times you feel like channeling your inner Jimmy Page, this will do ya.

I have three other archtop/semi-hollow body guitars; the Dot, and Casino, and the Lucille.
and they all feel a bit large to me, but this guitar is just right.
The only problem I had with my 339 was that the neck PUP did not sit parallel to the strings
due to the wood being pinched down to meet the neck thickness to be glued in place. While this
does not effect the larger guitars that much, it does the 339 especially when the angled bezel is
used in the wrong direction as is the case with the 339.
Reverse the bezel and if you must (as I did) remove a little material to make the angle a bit shallower. I had other Gibson bezels, but they were a bit to large, and the 339's are a tad smaller so you will have to rework the one that comes with the guitar.
Before I get a bunch of remarks that this is not that critical for the pickup face to be parallel with the strings; I agree, but that is just the way I am with my equipment, and at 67 you aint gonna change me now. And it just looks funny!

In a word, "WOW"! I am amazed at the quality of my Epi ES-339 Pro. I thought long and hard before ordering it, mainly because of where these are made. I have owned several USA Gibsons over the years (two ES-335s, four Les Pauls), so I'm familiar with Gibson and truly love the Gibson sound. However, I really can't justify spending the money Gibson wants for the models I prefer (and money is not really an issue for me). So I researched the ES-339 extensively and was impressed by the overwhelming positive reviews this guitar (as well as other Epi models being made today) received. I watched a ton of YouTube product reviews as well. In the end I decided to take a chance and order one. I'm glad I did.

The only things I had to do was lower the action for my likes, adjust the pickup height a smidge for better balance between the neck and bridge pickups, put on my preferred strings, replace the strap buttons with Strap Loks and replace the control knobs with Speed Knobs. Sounds like a lot, but all of these tweaks reflect personal preferences. It was fine out of the box.

Fit and finish are flawless. Very solid guitar and extremely stable. It stays in tune. As far as the action, I simply lowered the bridge. I expected I would have to tweak the truss rod and mess with intonation adjustments (things I always had to do with EVERY USA Gibson I've bought new). The neck couldn't have been more perfect. No adjustment needed. The fretwork was spot on.

I love these Classic Pro pickups. I generally do not like the stock pickups on USA Gibsons and ALWAYS replaced them with DiMarzios. I really wasn't expecting much from these Epi PUPS, but wow. They sound great and are perfect on this guitar (I played this through a Fender Twin).

Received this guitar from Santa. I really wanted a hollow body as I play in a cover band. While my strat is extremely versatile, it does not provide all the tonal qualities I'm trying to find.

The paint job is excellent and you can really get any type of tone out of the guitar. For the price, it will be hard to find a better guitar given what it can do. The ability to switch between humbucker and single coil is pretty cool, although I don't necessarily use the single coil position much. With the neck pickup selected, this guitar sounds absolutely beautiful!

With that said, the guitar needed a set up in the worst way. The intonation was completely out of whack, the trust rod needed to be adjusted and the string action was way to high.

I had the guitar properly set up by one of the most reputable guitar techs in the Boston area. According to the tech, it's a great guitar that was a mess coming from the factory.

I give it 5 stars as the product itself is fantastic, but expect to spend an additional $100+ getting the instrument where it needs to be.
