I bought this guitar used (and a little dinged up) from a local shop, but all I have to say is WOW!. This thing shreds. It is a metal master. I own about 5 other electric guitars, Its pretty fast (faster than my Epi Les Paul Trad Pro), I think any hardrock/metal musician should at least try the EMG 81/85 combo, cuz they kick some arse. It sounds absolutely amazing, my favorite studio guitar by far for heavy rhythm riffs. The cleans sound great too. The bad things are that it's kind of unbalanced (you should expect for any extreme shapes), but for an explorer it's better than other brands of the shape. Also the strap buttons need to be replaced with strap locks. The strap frequently falls off when stand and moving around.

This guitar is everything I hoped it would be. I picked it up at the nearest Guitar Center and this thing plays beautifully. I use it with a Marshall MA50C amp, and an Ibanez distortion pedal. I play mainly hard rock things with punk influence so I love the powerful lows I can get with this guitar. I don't know too much about guitars when it comes to technical things I just know this guitar sounds as good, if not better, than it looks.

Great guitar, sounds awesome. The only thing I can complain about is the finish on the guitar is low in quality. The one I purchased is ebony so it shows flaws in the paint easier than white does, but for the price and overall quality and sound I am ok with it.

i give this 3 stars becuase it is NOT a legit repro of the gibson 1984 explorer. i have had a the real deal since 1984! the geometry of the body is wrong as is the knob layout and the blacked out hardware. this may not be a big deal to you but i thought i'd mention it.
as for Epi quality; my gibson 1984 has been torn down completely several times over the decades by me.....the woodwork is HORRIBLE in the gibson! i have an Epiphone Les paul from 2000....it is superior in the wood dept....for 200beans you could deck out ANY guitar with new pots and pickups and have it sound/play better then an off the rack Gibson and trust me, i have always been a Gibson fan.

I recently bought this guitar through MusiciansFriend.com and upon arrival, I haven't been able to put it down! This guitar literally screams to be played! Smooth fret-board, solid neck (straight, no fret-rub), sturdy pegs/knobs/switch/bridge, not to mention, this bad boy is primed and ready for war with dual EMG 81/85's!! Just slap on some Ernie Ball Super Slinky's (pink pack) and unleash the power that this axe is capable of! You will need some extra 9-volt batteries for the EMG's, just in case. This guitar has a beautiful finish and you wouldn't want it getting messed up, so I strongly recommend that you buy this with the Epiphone Explorer Hard Shell Case. (The guitar fits like a snug glove, unbelievably soft, protective material, has a storage compartment, you can lock the case with a key, looks awesome, and I just love how it smells..lol)

I shred this axe with:

Marshall MG30CFX
MXR Fullbore Metal Pedal
Boss MT-2 Metal Pedal
(I alternate pedals since they produce different tones)
