Excerpt from Epistemology; Or the Theory of Knowledge, Vol. 1 of 2: An Introduction to General Metaphysics

The present work, which was commenced on the publication of the author's Ontology, is written from the same general standpoint as the Ontology and his earlier treatise on The Science of Logic. It aims at applying the principles of Scholasticism to the solution of the problems raised by a critical inquiry into the validity of knowledge and the grounds of certitude. It does not purport to be in any sense a history of theories of knowledge, or to supply anything like an adequate bibliography of works on the subject. It is primarily a text-book for the use of university students in philosophy, though it is hoped that a perusal of it may be found helpful to all who desire a closer acquaintance with the attitude of modern scholastic writers towards the critical problems which almost monopolize the attention of philosophers nowadays. It is needless to emphasize the growing importance of such problems in this age of restless inquiry and scepticism. Nor will a text-book in English from the standpoint of Scholasticism be deemed superfluous.

Kant's theory of knowledge is the only non-scholastic theory examined in any considerable detail: because most of the modern theories draw their inspiration directly or indirectly from principles propounded in the Critiques, so that the student who can appraise these principles on their merits will be in a position to deal with those theories in whatever guise they may confront him.

Peter Coffey's first volume of Epistemology is a cogent defense of Scholastic epistemology written in 1917. Coffey starts out in this volume defining his terms-e.g.cognition, knowledge, doubt, belief, certitude et al. One of his next steps is to determine his method of utilization. He enlightened me so much in defining what he called "methodic doubt" as opposed to real doubt-as seen predicated by Decartes. After much, much time spent on his definitions, method, instruments etc.,Coffey turns his eyes towards the subjectivism of Immanuel Kant's epistemology. Over a few sections he (quite substantially) tears down Kant's views and renders any type of subjectivist epistemology untenable. He then subsequently expounds the Scholastic theory of epistemology and demonstrates how it corrects the failures of opposing theories.

Coffey's next main area of focus is a rather crucial and important area, namely the problem of universals. He takes each answer to the problem of universals in turn-moderate realism, extreme realism (e.g. Plato), nominalism, and finally conceptualism. This part of the book, while very difficult reading in many places, was very interesting and illuminating. Coffey ends the book taking up Kant (once again, but not for the last time) as his conceptualist whipping-boy.

This book is absolutely brilliant to say the least. There is so much knowledge here to be absorbed. Many times i kept reading and reading and highlighting and highlighting that I found myself to have gone through a multitude of pages without even realizing it. This is a lot to say regarding a text on philosophy. That being said, this book, in partnership with Volume 2, was meant to be a textbook of epistemology and is therefore very in-depth. But, as a defense of Scholastic epistemology there is no better.
