This technology makes it possible to achieve exceptionally smooth gradations, amazingly accurate skin tones and sharp, grain–free photos.

Prints that outlast photo lab prints

Photos from the leading competitor last only 65 years on display under glass. With Epson, you can feel confident in sharing your prints for generations to come. Six–color Claria Hi–Definition Ink, together with Epson premium photo papers, offers the ultimate combination of photo quality and longevity.
Fast print speeds
This speedy all–in–one keeps up with your busy life. Print brilliant 4" x 6" photos in as fast as 10 seconds. The Artisan 710 is just as impressive when it comes to everyday documents like e–mails, driving directions, term papers and more, delivering maximum print speeds of 38 ppm and laser quality speeds of 9.5 ppm black and 9 ppm color.

With "smart" nozzles, this powerful technology delivers droplets in as many as five sizes, some as small as 1.5 picoliters. So, you get remarkable precision, sharper detail, smoother gradations and outstanding image quality – every print, every time.
Be more informed
The new international ISO print speed standardPrint speed is critically important when buying a printer or all-in-one. But how do you compare print speeds when different manufacturers measure in different ways? Now you can. Much like the "MPG" ratings on new cars, there's now a new industry standard for measuring print speed, which allows for an "apples-to-apples" comparison between different printer models and brands. The International Organization for Standardization (widely known as ISO) developed this industry approved and internationally accepted standard, specifically for ink jet printers and all-in-ones. It measures "out of the box" (default) print speeds using "real world" printing scenarios, so you can be sure you're getting a product that performs at the speed you need.

Setup: Surprisingly lengthy but easy. Instead of just loading all the software on my mac, it asked me about 7 times if it could load various programs, unfortunately it doesn't tell you what its loading so its kinda hard to say no. Fortunately there no annoying programs that pop up and annoy me with a "reminder" thats really just an ad. Wireless setup was super easy i just selected my router's name and entered the password. my mac found the printer easily also.
Software: easy to use. The epson is wireless (i hate wires/cords), double click on the icon (i drug it on my tool bar temporarily) and then clicked the scan button in the window. The weird thing is its closes after each scan and you have to re-open it which is why its better to put it on your desktop or task bar. Other than that its easy and automatically recognizes what your scanning and will adjust appropriately, you can also customize and save settings if you want. There's also the myepson that lets you make custom notepaper, cards and the like with extra designs available online for free. I havent really experimented with it too much, but the notepaper with my dog on it was kinda cool.
Hardware: The build is a bit flimsy especially the paper tray and top lid. I think its going to be fine, for my light to moderate use. There's no paper feeder so if you plan on doing lots of scanning a feeder might be better for you. The buttons and menu are easy to read and intuitive. The memory card reader is great and that its wireless to my mac (which has no built in card reader) is a nice bonus because i lose my thumb-drive sd card reader all the time. Theres an ability to print cd/dvds if you have printable ones (comes with one disc), you just push a dedicated button to open the special tray, looks easy, but I don't have any plans to print them since i either use my ipod for music or email photos, but I'm sure itd be great for people who love making discs.
Bonus: came with an extra container of black ink. I can print photos from my iphone directly to the printer. Theres a free app, that lets you print any photo in your iphone album, you can select print size, border or not, or even print to regular paper. I've printed a few to 4x6 and was impressed that it actually looked better than the iphone screen. Unfortunately you can't print notes or documents. Theres another app i saw in the app store that allows you to print more than photos, but I'm hesitant to try it. I'm unsure if those apps work on an itouch, but i'd imagine it would since its wifi enabled.
As for the disk printing, the quality is just "ok". I use Taiyo Yuden printable disks (which have been excellent) and just can't seem to get the color right. Either the magenta is too strong or the greens are too strong. You can tweak the color to some extent in the included software. However to be perfectly honest, the included software is awful. The controls are crude, difficult to understand, and are inconsistent. Once I finally think I've got the color issues worked out, they rear their ugly head again.
So anyway, aside from the color gremlins when printing, the overall quality of general prints is excellent. I haven't had any problems with print heads clogging or lines on the prints. I use third party ink cartridges and they are FAR cheaper than the name brand Epson ones, yet look just as good. The third party ink cartridges seem to go unrecognized by the printer when they get down to about 20% capacity, but for the price (about $1/cartridge), its still well worth your money to go this route. Wireless scanning also works well and is quick.
So yes, overall I am fairly happy with this printer. I have the printer sitting about 6 feet away from my (very cluttered) desktop. I'm so glad that I've been able to clear off the space on my desk where my printer used to be.
Each year for the Christmas holiday, we create and send out a holiday DVD in lieu of a letter. It has become quite the thing for our friends and family to enjoy. To maintain the professional appearance of the disc, we finish the DVD on Taiyo Yuden DVD-R Watershield discs.
For the past couple of years, I've been using the DYMO Discpainter to print the discs, which I purchased for $250. The way the Discpainter works is by sucking in the disc, spinning it, and laying ink onto the disc as it's ejected from the printing chamber. I've used it for about 5 times over approx 3 years (mostly at the holiday), to print about 400 or so discs I'm guessing. Recently, the Discpainter pooped out on me (technical term). It sucks the disc in, spins it, lays the ink, but doesn't eject it. In sum, it spills a bunch of ink into the printing chamber, ruining the disc, and getting ink all over the tray. Honestly, while I've printed several hundred discs in all, I don't think the longevity of the DYMO Discpainter was in any way representative of its cost. I feel I got taken for a ride. I suspect the Discpainter is discontinued (probably for good reason), as I can't really find a ton of support info on it at dymo.com. IMHO their website is a disaster.
So, for the holiday, 2010, I needed a replacement disc printer fast. I used my Amazon PRIME to overnight the Epson Artisan 710 for $130 + shipping (at the time). I have not used it a lot yet, but for the 60 discs I just printed, I can say I'm completely pleased with my purchase.
DYMO DISCPAINTER
- $250.
- Lasted about 3-4 years, printed about 400 discs before dying.
- The ink is only 3 color (CMY). No black ink. For black, the printer combines the other 3 colors into a "mostly" black.
- Only prints discs.
- Looks to be discontinued.
- DYMO website and customer support are horrible IMHO.
EPSON ARTISAN 710
- $130.
- Cannot yet speak toward longevity, but Epson is a reputable company.
- Prints discs, standard paper, photo paper, scans, faxes, copies, has memory card reader.
- Network and wifi compatible, though I only use it for direct USB connection (my Brother color laser printer is my main networked printer for the house).
- Uses 6 colors and a dedicated black cartridge.
- Epson... again, name brand, I trust them more than DYMO for this kind of printing need.
For the money, the Artisan 710 completely outperforms my prior disc printer. It cost less, and not only prints discs, but photos, documents, and has a host of other services as an all-in-one device. The print quality is great. The discs I've printed have looked very sharp, very colorful, and the black is outstanding for text.
The Artisan 710 also has a dedicated disc tray, which I like a lot. I didn't have to buy an adapter to print on discs, that I fit into the machine. You just press the eject button, and the disc tray pops in and out. The paper tray is a separate tray, and it can hold both standard paper as well as smaller photo paper at the same time. I understand that this device also supports duplexing (which even my Brother color laser doesn't do).
So in sum, I'm very happy with my Artisan 710. Like you've read, I've only used it so far for disc printing, but for that it has done an outstanding job. I have no doubt that photo prints would also be outstanding, knowing Epson's reputation in this arena. I've also not used the copy, fax, wifi functions, but I'm very pleased they're there. This is our 2nd printer, with our main one being the color laser, but it does fit well into my home office and serves the functions that I need it to serve very well.
Great device for the money. Very much worth it!
UPDATE 11.11.2012
Still loving this printer. My main printer is still the color laser, so I find that I'm not very often cleaning or checking the print heads on the Epson. Yet, when I remember and go to check them, they seem unclogged for the most part. I'm very impressed. Still holding up great for disc printing too (its main purpose in my office).
