But what I want to focus on here are the differences between the models, since that information is a bit hard to find.
When I search for this model, Amazon also suggests the following...So I'll save you some research.
Epson Home Cinema 730HD, HDMI, 3LCD, 3000 Lumens $399 (refurb)
Epson Home Cinema 730HD, HDMI, 3LCD, 3000 Lumens $499
Epson Home Cinema 740HD, HDMI, 3LCD, 3000 Lumens $599 <--THIS MODEL
Epson Home Cinema 1040, HDMI, 3LCD, 3000 Lumens $799
The 730HD is the earlier model of this projector. It has slightly higher! resolution (1280x800 instead of 1280x720). I figure they went to the 720 for the newer so the image could be 1:1 for a 720P image without any interpolation that could affect image quality. But I doubt the average person could see a difference. The other difference is that the 730 contrast ratio is 1:12,000 and the newer 740 is 1:15,000
Short story - for $200 LESS you could get a refurb 730 (or $100 less for new) and have virtually the same projector.
For $200 MORE you could have the 1080P version of this projector (1280x1200 interpolated to 1280x1080).
Is 1080P worth the extra money? Probably not. Unless you sit very close to your projection screen. Then you will notice a difference (the 1080p version also has a max image size of 300 inches vs 320 for the 720p versions if this matters to you)
Would I buy one of these epson projectors? YES! They are an amazing value for the price, well designed, clear menus, lots of options, and a nice picture. The question is which one fits your budget/needs the best. Hopefully this will be helpful as you choose.
Set up was easy, plug the HDMI cable from your apple tv, roku, amazon fire and chromecast and put your sound source into your receiver (or not, it has pretty decent sound on its own) aim the picture, focus and sit back!
I had my Epson on the right side of the dresser and needed the picture to be on the opposite wall but on the left. Not sure it would work but thanks to this think called Vertical Keystone, the picture was placed perfectly on that wall -- it's baffling!
The picture OMG the picture. It was stunning. I had no idea how remarkable this technology had become. My wall is a darker cream color and the colors that came through were amazingly untouched. There are a few cool settings to help you make the picture clearer.
It does have a bit of fan noise but it's important because this guy gets hot!!
My Room Size: 14X10
My wall Color: turquiose (mild)
Window: 1 (Facing South West)
Picture is very clear. Sound is good. I invested in a Vizio Soundbar (5.1)/ surround sound to go with the projector. I am loving our family movie watching experience. It is awesome and money well spent. Projector is a bit noise in the begining, but once your content is played, you wouldnt notice any projector noise. I have placed my Sound bar, Woofer, Speakers all at the back wall with the projector and it is wonderful. Remember sound bars are placed traditionally under the screen in the front, but I took an untraditional route to place everything together in the back wall on the ladder book shelf and it works great. Here are some pictures to help you make your own decision. These pictures and the video sample were shot in broad day light. The window referenced above was covered by a regular blind and a Simple curtain.
Drawbacks: I would have loved to have a second HDMI port on the projector to connect my Sound Bar, but nevertheless I can connect it via Aux and I get very good sound.
