Printer #2: Printed across wifi and across a wired connection right out the box. We were excited! Unfortunately, the prints appeared hyperrealistic. It seems to me that Epson might be doing something to the photos in software - such as sharpening with an unsharp mask - to make them appear to have very fine detail. Sure, the detail is good. But these photos look contrast-expanded and unrealistic. I'll have to look for something to reduce this effect since it's undesirable to me.
After a having this printer for a few weeks, it now has the same problem as the first one. Our wireless network is up 100% of the time, the printer says it's connected to the wireless network, but it only prints ~1" of the top of the photo, hangs for a few minutes, then cancels. Very frustrating. We are running Windows 7, have a hidden SSID and use WPA2, so you might not have this problem if your configuration is different.
Update: Attempted to fix this with a "Restore Default Settings" command and reinstallation of the software. That's when I discovered that Epson installed 10 pieces of software on my system (listed under the Uninstall or change a program window in Control Panel) just for this printer! One piece of software is called the "Epson Customer Experience" which is a terminate-stay-resident (TSR) program that runs all of the time in the background. Who knew? My advice to everyone is NOT to use the factory install CD since it puts too much useless software on your machine. I downloaded the driver only from the Epson site and my printer is working again. Therefore, for anyone having connection errors or printing problems with the XP-820, do a factory restore to defaults and UNINSTALL all Epson software before reinstalling ONLY the printer driver from the Epson website.
Epson - you need to give people more information on what they're installing and what you're tracking. Installing 10 pieces of software for a single printer including a background TSR "customer experience" program is bad form.
What is it about printing stuff on paper that is so g-d difficult? We've made tremendous strides in computing. They get smaller, they get faster, they have more features, the prices come down. But the act of printing stuff out seems to be stalled in the 1970's. If it were up to me, I'd rarely print anything out. Unfortunately, my kid's school requires me to on occasion. I think this time, despite the fact that I have a whole set of unused ink cartridges for this pos, I'm going to obliterate this thing and try, once again, to find a printer that will work. This one does not. Save your money.
XP premium series is explicitly engineered to be very prickly with third party cartridges (one time or refillable). Epson does make its money with the ink not the printer. I guess that is also why its ok. if they break quickly and just get replaced instead of repaired.
If you plan to use third party cartridges, try to print full areas of the base colors (cyan, magenta, yellow) and check that they have no banding - on glossy letter/A4 sized photo paper . That is when third party cartridges will expose most ink flow problems because the print head has to draw in ink with the highest rate from the cartridges. I even had an original cartridge that had problems with this test.
When the cartridges and printhead like each other, photos on glossy paper are IMHO marvelous even though it only uses 3 colors. Small 1.5 droplets really help to not see the dithering necessary.
