This as an entry level AIO (all-in-one) printer that has some good features going for it and some not-so-good.
1. Size: it won't hog your desktop yet performs the basic functions of a printer, copier, scanner (no fax).
2. It prints acceptable but not great photos when used with the appropriate photo paper. The photos are not great because it does not use any specialty photo color ink tanks, only the four basic colors usually found on low-end printers
3. The printer can be used with a standard USB cable or wirelessly. Wireless operation has improved markedly recently, allowing easy printer sharing, use with smartphones or tablets, and permitting the printer to be located in more convenient locations. When used wirelessly it prints just as fast as when it is connected using a wired connection.
THE PRINTER ALSO HAS SOME DOWNSIDES:
1. It is slower than some people may be used to.
2. It is NOT a two-sided printer, a severe disadvantage. Two-sided printing is common on printers these days that cost as low as $50.
3. The LCD display screen is relatively small and is not high resolution.
4. While the ink cartridges are low priced they also have a low page count which can make the cost-per-print higher than average.
It is rated an average buy for its very small size, quality of construction and paper handling (front feed).
Final note - shop carefully. The selling price of this model varies widely. At the lowest selling price it's worth considering. At the higher end of the range there are better options available.
This printer uses the T288 cartridges, which are only available in Epson brand. Remanufactured cartridges do not yet exist. Cheapest cartridges I found on Amazon were over $50 instead of less than $5.
The setup is easy, following the clear instructions. The WiFi setup is also smooth. The printouts are, like most Epson printers, always above average, if not the best. I'm not expecting the top notch printouts from a sub one hundred dollar printer, but this printer doesn't disappoint me at all.
Another reviewer complains about not having duplex printing feature. However, I can't expect such feature from a printer at this price and size, and I wouldn't trust the smooth functionality of duplexing at this size. The more complex features you have at this size, the more likely it will break sooner. I can always print double sided by using the manual duplex feature on the printer property setting.
My only complaint is that the printer feels a little flimsy. Even though it's small, square and flat, which make it easy to carry in a bag, once you pull out the paper feeder and tray, it does stretch out a little more into the surrounding space, and these arms feel quite flimsy. However, for gentle users, I'm sure this printer will serve them well.
I recommend it.
First off, the XP-430 is relatively compact, as advertised. If anyone remembers the days of home dot-matrix printers, it has a smaller footprint than most of those, and does a lot more. Taking it out of the box was easy enough - pull off some tape and a foam insert, peel off protective wrap, and it's ready for set up. There's a quick start sheet, and a slightly wordier booklet. As is too much the current practice, more detailed information has to be gotten over the Internet. Set up starts by plugging it in and turning it on. The control display on the front of the printer will get you started to the point of installing the ink cartridges (included) and loading paper (not included). If you are going to use it over a wifi network, it will then seek it out and make its presence known.
There is a CD-ROM included with installation tools for Windows and Apple devices. This is an Apple household, so I can only speak to using the XP-430 with a MacBook Pro running OS X Yosemite and an iPhone 6 plus and 5C running iOS. With the ink cartridges primed, paper loaded, and the XP-430 talking to the network, I put the install CD-ROM into my MacBook to get the Epson drivers and other Epson tools loaded. You need an internet connection for this step, because the install program looks at what you have, and then connects you to the Epson website to download what you need. This took a few minutes.
I started the downloaded software to finish the install process. I was walked through a number of screens, step by step, and arrived at a screen telling me installation was complete - and I could print a test page to verify it. I did - and it worked just fine. I quit the installation program and next tried printing a GIF file from Photoshop. Again, no problems. Ditto for printing a document from Pages. It is possible to connect directly with a USB cable (not included), but I didn't bother.
Printing from the iPhones was even easier. There's an action icon on the screen (It looks like a square with an arrow coming up out of it.) Pressing on that brings up a list of options including a printer icon. I was able to print photos directly from both phones.
I tried a couple of other things. Making a copy is as simple as selecting COPY on the front panel, and pushing a start button; you can choose color or black and white. I put an SD memory card from a camera into the card slot on the lower left front, it detected the card, and let me go through the photos one by one to pick the one I wanted to print. The screen gives a very low resolution display of the image files. It's good enough you can get some idea of what the photo is, but it you are choosing between several that are similar, you'll probably want to know which one you want ahead of time. You can do all of this just by using the controls on the front of the XP-430.
All in all, my initial impression of the XP-430 is very favorable. I like the idea of being able to print right from my laptop or my phone without having to hook up cables or downloading files. I expect I'll be adding to this review later after I've spent more time with it. I haven't tried using it as a scanner yet, or using it to upload pictures to the Internet. There's the Epson applications that came with it too. How long ink cartridges last will also be something to be determined.
So far, really good.
