First up here a minor complaint: Amazon, please don't show reviews for other models with this device. As I've seen at other times, currently Amazon seems to be consolidating reviews for this item with other similar items from the same manufacturer. That can easily confuse customers and leave someone thinking that features that weren't included in a newer model are supposed to be there.

Now, on to the review for this device (the Epson Expression XP-420 Wireless Color Small-in-One printer).

I like this device a lot. Not quite 5 stars and perfect range, but still very, very nice. It is, as promised, small and easy to setup and use. It is also easily fed with individual ink cartridges that are not that spendy. Buying a new round of ink for this printer won't break the bank, something that I've not always been able to say (looks in the general direction of the landfill that an older HP ink-jet printer went to as that device cost me a small fortune in ink cartridges). I also like the mobile device that is available with this device, making it much easier for me to print from my phone or my tablet devices. Finally, I like the scanner as well. It does an adequate job for my needs and I would think for most potential users. All around, just a nice job from Epson, taking older versions of devices in this family and adding in new features and improvements based on prior customer feedback.

Some things I didn't like quite as much: 100 sheet paper tray sounds like a lot of paper, but it really isn't as much as it seems and if you print a lot you'll empty that print tray quickly and find yourself having to refill it often. If you don't print so frequently, or as much at any point in time as I might, then you may not notice that issue at all. For me, it is one of the few areas I dropped the rating in. Not by much, but enough to keep me from giving this a perfect score.

4 solid stars from me with a slight lean towards the next star.

The XP-420 is a great little printer from Epson, recently replacing their XP-320 model, the key difference being that the 320 has a 1.44 inch LCD screen, and the 420 has a larger 2.5 inch LCD screen.

Otherwise all their stats are the same: 9/4.5 pages per minute (BW/color), 2400 pi, and print resolution up to 5760x1440.

It scans to the usual formats: jpeg, tiff, PDF, png, etc. (Others too, but those are the ones I use most.)

As a Mac users I've always just downloaded the Epson drivers when prompted, and in the case of the 420 setup was a breeze. Once setup, I could print from my Macbook Air over the network, and from my iPad directly to the printer. Both devices found the printer easily and there were no glitches. You can use a USB cable (not included), or print from an SD card, which is where the LCD comes in handy.

This is a compact printer, paper feeds in from the top (pull up the little tray), and while it says it can hold 100 sheets I didn't load that many--I suspect it would get pretty tight.

The printer comes with starter ink cartridges. Just enough to get you going. Of course, the printer is cheap and the ink will cost you, but of course that's been the economy of printers for the past ten years or so: low cost machine, but they make their money on the ink. That said, the quality of this printer is good, and for the price and quality of prints (both paper and photo) it's a good value.

My first experience with the Epson XP-420 printer with both iPad and PC taught me a number of things. First, the machine is obviously quite small compared to comparable printers. It looked modern, but it was shiny black and a lint catcher like so many others. The four ink cartridges installed easily after I figured out how to get them opened up and ready to insert. Paper loading is from the back and out in the open. The thing is mostly plastic of course which makes it very light, but still durable and it doesn't dance around on the counter.

Drivers and stuff that were supposedly needed in order to make the printer work were provided on a DVD that would not work on an iPad of course so the directions described how the drivers and such could be downloaded from the Internet on an Epson site.
I tried the download and discovered that there was no option for getting it for iOS systems--Windows, Mac and Lunix only. At that point I was ready to toss the printer into the trash.

I decided to just ignore the instructions and connected the printer to my WiFi router. The printer automatically connected to my iPad and other iOS devices, but I did have to enter that big long password required by the router and that went in on the first try using the color screen on the printer.

Well, you have probably guessed--the printer then automatically connected to my iPad via WiFi and printed things all over the place. No drivers or other operational stuff were needed.

I later connected the printer to my Windows 7 PC using the provided DVD. That was easy, but be ready with the serial number on the Epson printer. It is required as part of the process for registering the product.

For me, the review is truly mixed on this. There are aspects of it that I like, such as it's small size and light weight. It is certainly adequate for the average home printing needs. But there are also several aspects of it that drive me nuts. To begin with, setup was very frustrating. The first two times I turned it on it made a horrible noise and kept giving me an error code. There was no explanation in the four page guide to explain error codes, and the Epson website had no such error code logged. I finally found the problem by doing some Google searching on my own and discovering many other such baffled customers with the same error code. One person somehow managed to discover the error was because a small piece of blue packing tape got left on the ink cartridge holder. All of that could have been avoided had the directions been more clear, but the setup directions are really nothing more than a few crudely drawn pictures.

Installing the ink was easy enough and the included software also installed on my laptap with no trouble, but then began the real frustration. After you go through the installation and registration, it will take you to the Epson Connect site where you have to download more drivers and updates and then sync with Google Cloud printing, sync with AirPrint and so on. It was a long multi-step process before I was actually able to print and scan things. The basic scans I took came out quite nice, but the printing didn't fair as well. It's not that it prints out bad picture, per se. Looking at them on their own they look great. But when compared to printouts from my older model Epson (that sold at the same price point) they look less clear and more washed out, fine details are lost.
