One measurement of brightness is not enough — look for both high color brightness and high white brightness. The MegaPlex 850HD has:
- Color Brightness – 2800 lumens (color light output)
- White Brightness – 2800 lumens (white light output)
- Ultra bright, HD performance — HD, 720 p resolution to display large images from your digital devices in crystal-clear detail and brilliant color
- Take it anywhere — lightweight; easy setup; includes HDMI, USB Plug ‘n Play and a built-in dock for Apple devices to instantly project audio and video
Amazing color brightness for brilliant image quality
With today’s high-definition content, you want your movies to appear with show-stopping quality in both darkened home theaters and brighter environments. One brightness measurement (lumens) is not enough. Look for both high color brightness and high white brightness to have a truly impressive image.
High color brightness also enables an even better image for larger screen sizes and for a larger variety of screen materials. Without sufficient color brightness, images may be muddy, soft and lose detail, even in a dark room. If not provided, be sure to ask for a projector’s color brightness specification. Get consistent, true-to-life color with Epson projectors, whether you’re watching movies, playing video games, or watching a family slideshow.

However, on the PROJECTION front, the color and image are magnificent and the built-in speakers are great. It's a mixed bag, but I got it for an excellent price. I do with the speakers were adjustable. Sound is great when projector is in front of you but not ideal when it's behind you.
Turns out I shouldn't have worried. This product is honestly spectacular. Because of the layout of my room, I project on a wall that's 15 feet or so away from the unit itself. This provides, at the tightest setting, an image that is slightly wider than my sofa--8 feet or so. Even at that size, I am stunned by the clarity and richness of the image against a normal white living-room wall. I've watched everything from general television to the Super Bowl to movies on DVD to video games and I can't get over what a pleasure the whole thing is.
A couple of quibbles, in the interest of balance: I never watch in the daytime--at the size I'm projecting it just washes out a bit too much. But at night I watch it in my living room and it's great. I keep one or two table lamps on and, so long as they are not close to the projected image, they are fine. So it's not like you're locked in a dark room. I suspect that if the unit was closer to the screen, this problem would be reduced. Second, it's annoying that some streaming services won't allow for HMDI output. I'm referring to HBOPlus specifically. I can watch programming on my iPad, but when I plug the iPad into the back of the projector I get an info box that says the programming source doesn't support HMDI streaming. Not the unit's fault, exactly, but still a limitation. Third, I've read reviews that say the fan is a bit loud. I suppose if you are sitting close to the unit, that might be the case. For me, it's a non-issue. Finally, super-fast motion, like some sports programming, causes the background images to pixelate a bit. But as noted above, I've watched the Super Bowl and several basketball games and it is excellent, but perhaps not absolutely optimal.
Back to the positive side, if you pick up projectors in an electronics store, they always seem flimsy. This one, by comparison, feels like a tank. Focus and keystone adjustments both work easily. Sound quality is excellent--better than my television.
And finally, I used to have it hooked up to my DVD player. Now I keep it attached to the TV cable box and watch almost all of my television on it--which must say something.
I am extremely satisfied.
If all you want is a great image with sound coming from the the internal speakers you are all set. You can use an Apple TV, Laptop, iPad, iPhone, DVD drive etc.... Connecting via HDMI is a great option, since the world is moving that way, you will find HDMI adaptors for your laptop, as well as i-gadgets. The built in i-gdget holder is a great idea, BUT, with a case on, it won't fit into the connector. My cases are a pain to take off, so..... not really useable to me. But I can connect with video mirroring via HDMI adaptors by apple.
So, what if you want more robust sound? Of course connecting to an AV receiver as if you are indoors will solve the problem in spades. But I don't want to lug a receiver outside. I just want to enhance (or replace) the sound from the internal speakers. A simple audio out jack would help.
I have some work arounds but they all vary depending on the video source. Rogue Amoeba Software LLC makes a software product called Airfoil that can help take advantage of multiple Airplay speakers used with the Airport Express. But only if playing a source from laptop that is NOT Apple DRM protected (so you can use DVDs or iTunes movies that you put there NOT from apple store.) But if playing a DVD from laptop, you can send audio all over the place via airplay thanks to the AirFoil software. Using the i-gadget will allow you to use Netflix, Slingbox to send video to projector and you can send audio to projector OR send it to another airplay source (1 source only).
So bottom line is that this projector ROCKS as long as you can survive with the very strong internal speakers, or have the patience to work around the lack of a simple audio out jack.......
