Oh, and I made no adjustments of any kind to the printer before I made my first picture. I simply selected the highest print quality and "Ultra Premium Glossy Photo Paper" as the source, and that was it. The colors were an exact match of the picture on my calibrated monitor. Now, if this thing just keeps working, I'll be a happy camper for a long time.
Edit: Over one year into ownership now, and still no problems whatsoever. No ink clogs or paper feeding errors. It gulps down ink, and the ink isn't cheap, but the stunning prints are worth it. I've used numerous papers, including Hahnemuhle Photo Rag and Epson Velvet Fine Art, and the pictures come out perfectly using just the provided profile for "Epson Premium Presentation Paper Matte". I can't tell you the feeling when a client looks at their print for the first time and their breath catches in their throat. The cost of the ink, though, has meant that I only use this printer for paying customers or special prints. For everyday stuff, I still use my old Canon IP6220. Still, when I need an awesome print, this is my baby.
So far the photographic prints and oversized CAD drawings are great from it. Almost no corrections necessary from the 1280, just some minor setup changes with the newer software... I have heard problems with ink usage etc. but I think that is just people not being used to this kind of printing. I am also hoping that the way the ink is split up in the 1400, that I only use what I need, not just have to replace the entire color cartridge every time any of the 3 colors empties.... I have used cartridges from other third parties before on the 1280. They seem fine. Just look for cartridges that have great references from other professional users.
UPDATE April 2013- Still happy with the printer but $120 for a full set of 6 small ink cartridges from Epson is insane. In the end I just use third party inks with great feedback from other users, for $10 a set.... Epson- charging crazy prices for your inks just drives people away from both them, and in the end, even your printers.
That said, I've come across what seems to be a unique problem. Everything that I've printed so far as come out a bit larger than it should. For example, after I cut out a cd booklet I printed with crop marks, which should being 4.75", it came out 1/8" larger. Other things that should have been 11" x 14" came out about a quarter inch larger. I just wrote Epson asking about this problem, so I'll have to update once they respond. While trying to come across others who might have had this problem, I stumbled back upon Amazon, so I thought I might as well write one of these.
So there's a setting in the printer's dialogue box (outside of the program's print menu), called Expansion. For some reason the default is on "Max," which means that it distorts the print by enlarging it, so that you can have a bleed. Now I see how Epson thinks of the people it is marketing this printer to: idiots.
