Its home cinema line begins with the budget PowerLite Home Cinema series, and extends up to the pro-grade PowerLite Pro Cinema family.
This particular unit falls towards the lower end of the budget offerings. As a result, my expectations were not particularly high. Unfortunately, the 707 met my expectations.
I used it to project on to a 135" diagonal screen in a dedicated light-controlled room. The results were decent, but not spectacular. The colors are natural, and image brightness is fine - if you can control stray light.
The first thing that struck me was that the fan was surprisingly loud even when the projector had just been turned on. Fortunately, once the movie begins, this noise receded into white noise and was not too aggravating.
Though the picture was reasonable at the default settings, I was able to coax out a slightly better picture by playing with its picture options such as brightness, conrtast, color temperature and saturation. However, adjustment options are very limited and coarse grained.
The limitations of its 1280x800 resolution also become very apparent at higher projection sizes.
Overall, this is par for the course at this price point - hence my 3-star (It's Okay) rating. Just don't go in expecting too much (such as true black) and you won't be disappointed.
The build quality of this device is solid. The outer shell is durable enough and I didn't think the buttons were excessively loose. Being a projector, it's important that the unit has some durability to be able to toss it into a box or bag and carry it to a new location. I think this unit will hold up for that rather well.
The cost of this unit is relatively affordable, but consumers need to recognize what they are purchasing. All projectors need a very dark room to enjoy any real dynamic contrast range, and this Epson is no exception. I used it against a screen and on an open swath of drywall. In both cases, I was able to view acceptable levels of contrast and brightness at night when the rooms were dark. During a sunny afternoon in a room with a couple windows, however? Things are difficult to see. Some people might not notice, or care, as they simply want a huge 80" image. But it's difficult to appreciate good video production with this device. Even a moderate priced, backlit LCD TV will provide you with better contrast levels than this Epson.
This Epson is also only 720p, not full 1080p HD. Additionally, it only has one HDMI input. So again, if you're looking to set this up as a "Gold Edition Home Cinema" centerpiece, you are going to be quite limited. There is a built in speaker which works well enough in a pinch when you tote this thing outside during an outdoor fire at night, but isn't that great when you want to enjoy a good movie.Read more ›
The Epson Home Cinema 707 is an excellent entry level HD projector at an affordable price range, and it displayed very strong out-of-the-box performance. It utilizes Epson's trademark 3LCD technology, an alternative to the DLP technology used by competing projectors. 3LCD theoretically offers advantages over DLP, including no rainbow effects, lower power consumption, and lower pricing. However, higher priced DLP projectors are less likely to exhibit the aforementioned characteristics.
- Built-in speaker audio quality
- Legacy video input support
- Carrying bag
- Video quality
- Horizontal/vertical keystoning
- Only 1 HDMI port
- Mono, not stereo, speaker
- Low contrast ratio
BUILD QUALITY: The Epson was solidly constructed upon removal from the packaging. The plastic had a nice glossy feel which resisted fingerprints. A carrying bag, remote control + batteries, and assorted cables were also provided. I appreciated that legacy inputs are supported, including analog audio and composite video. There is one significant downside in that only one HDMI input is provided. I don't have an HDMI switcher, so I had to manually unplug my bluray player and swap it with the FIOS/Cable TV connection each time I wanted to change the source.
VIDEO QUALITY: Video quality out of the box was fantastic. There is NO lens shift capability, but there is horizontal/vertical keystoning. Keystoning was adjustable via physical buttons, and these buttons helped optimize the placement and positioning of the projector image. Only 2D/720p is supported, so 3D/1080p fans will have to look elsewhere.Read more ›
