After reading, watching all the reviews and conducting my own research on the Epson Workforce 840, Canon PIXMA MX870 and HP 8500a, I selected the Epson 840. Set up was seemless. I am impressed with the features, functions and print quality BUT most importantly for me, the scanning software works and provides several options the HP does not (like scann directly into a microsoft word.doc).
One other note on the former HP vs new Epson - networking set up. My former HP was finicky on my home network. Even though it sat 2 feet from my work station, a hardwire network connection was touch and go. The only thing that seemed to be consistent was a USB cable and forget wireless (all that being said - my former HP worked very well with my wife's iMAC - go figure, but I credit the MAC not the HP). TO NOTE: the Epson 840 network set up with my same workstation/pc was easy and effortless!
Bonus: I really like the intuitive touch screen interface and how you can position it at eye level for easy viewing!
I haven't had any paper jambs or errors in that time. I have not been using the wireless functionality, so I can not speak on that.
I have scanned a lot of documents with it and it has been working great. Both the document feeder and the single sheet methods. I have an Apple iMac and you now use the Preview application for your scanning with this printer. You no longer have to install any Epson software at all if you are using OS X 10.7 Lion. It has been so wonderful. Apple's software update has kept the printer drivers up to date and it performing correctly without me having to do anything or be aware of software for the printer at all. I love it. It's truly plug and play with this printer on a Mac with OS X 10.7!
I have owed several of the Epson line of printers in the past including the WorkForce 600 when it first came out. All in all this is now my new favorite. For me it's been an ideal printer.
If this review has been helpful at all, a click would be really appreciated. Please feel free to comment on it with any questions and I will try to respond. Thanks!
Copy, print, scan, fax, media read, scan to file, etc, etc, etc.. ALL work flawlessly! Tested them all. I love this printer! Researched for over 2 months before I decided on this model. ONLY negative that meant anything to me was that photo printing wasn't the highest quality, but for what I use it for, that is minimal.
I started this printer up without it being connected to the PC, I programmed it to join the wireless network from the unit itself, erased everything, then programmed it from the PC via the network & software. Everything went great! Easy for me on both points of info input. For ease of use, it said I could temp connect it to the PC with USB, but I got this to be AWAY from the PC, who wants a wireless printer to be connected?? NOT ME!
The printer is at the other end of the room, far away from the main PC. ALL the computers in the house (and there is four) AND my android phone can print wirelessly!
INK.. I loved the fact that all the colors are separate & only have to replace what is low, every time I print, I check ink levels and it seems to be "sipping" it ever so lightly (I've printed several documents and it is NOT an ink hog, as it acts like it is on a diet in regards to ink). I can also check ink levels via my android phone even. Ink was NOT as expensive as my last ink hog, an HP Officejet v40xi (and some other HP's I've had). The ink was substantially much less that buying the HP ink. I have not purchased the "cheaper" ink for this, as I prefer to buy genuine Epson ink for this printer, since the cost is MUCH less than what I was used to paying! I love Epson's instant DRY ink technology, it works wonderful. The ink is dry as soon as the printer spits it out.
POSITIVES: Can print from ANY PC and android or iPhone in my home.
- Fax, scan, print, copy just about anything
- 2 paper trays! (one can be used for "specialty paper", but I just have two trays full of regular paper)
- ink dries INSTANTLY! No more smudges! (I prefer to buy the Epson ink, and it isn't that expensive)
- FAST.. Leaves my HP printers I've ever owned in the dust! Color or B&W (my husband says it prints as fast as his B&W laser for most documents!)
- Flat bed scanning/copying or document feed scanning/copying!
- Double sided printing/scanning etc(though I don't use this much yet)it is nice for projects and brochures
- The document feeder on top folds down nicely to a flat surface & the paper tray is integrated inside the machine, and the paper eject holder that can pull out from the front folds in flush, GREAT when you have to dust, or to keep dust OUT of the machine (GREAT HOUSEKEEPING printer ;-)
- Tilt out touch screen display (very helpful when you are working directly over the printer)
- fold out paper catcher (nice)
- small footprint (for all it does, the size doesn't take up much room or stick out like some printers)
- MEDIA CARD READs direct to printer (of where you can edit directly) or to PC etc.. Very nice.
- Printer sleeps, but can always be left on. When someone wants to print, it "wakes up" and does its job
-OK.. I could go ON and ON and ON.. This was a GREAT purchase, and my husband loves it if he has to work from home for his business use & the kids think it is "cool & fast"
OK.. The negatives I've found... (and honestly, NONE of them is a deal breaker unless you want the highest quality photo art printer out there)...
- Photo printing isn't the highest quality, could be better, but the pics do print out nice, so do the graphics at a high speed.
- FAX still needs to be connected to a landline via phone cord to fax from home via the printer's fax (We just got a 25 Ft phone cord for that, so no biggie for us really)
- Orange touch screen display seems a little dated, but really it is just an aesthetic attribute, it is still full color photo editing on the screen, I don't really care what the touch screen button color is (but some people do according to reviews) it is simple, responsive, easy and it WORKS. What else could anyone want?
- ALL the PC's that will be using this to print need to have the software installed on it to use this all in one. Not a big deal, I just installed the drivers onto the PC's via the CD, AND I also dowloaded the online version to try on a couple of the PC's, both are the same, and worked just fine. (if I ever lost my CD, the online one works great too
** There was a NEW FREE app for the android to print on the Epson Wireless (Epson iPrint), and it works well the couple times I used it.
Honestly, I use this for the kids school projects (tweens & teenagers), MY personal stuff, my husband's work from home office business stuff, & my non~profit volunteer work and my continuing education (college) stuff. This PC does it all and fits the bill. The two months I researched and researched and agonized over a choice in printers, and this was the final result, and it was WELL worth it. Over several several SEVERAL review sites, this one came up with the highest marks consistently, and I can see why.
I could get more technical on all it does, but really, there is videos and specs out there from the Epson site you can watch. Our whole family loves this Printer!
Hope this helped. OH>. And by the way, Amazon.com had the BEST price of any site out there for this printer.
