Editorial Reviews
In a futuristic world, a regime has eliminated war by suppressing emotions: books, art and music are strictly forbidden and feeling is a crime punishable by death. Clerick John Preston (Christian Bale) is a top-ranking government agent responsible for destroying those who resist these rules. When he misses a dose of Prozium, a mind-altering drug that hinders emotion, Preston, who has been trained to enforce strict laws of the new regime, suddenly becomes the one capable of overthrowing it.

Such a shame that the rioting hordes, those truly filled with hatred unquenched in their aftermath, the very people who will be to blame for a totalitarian style takeover to re-establish the law and order they have destroyed. To view this film and to situate themselves as the people fighting for freedom when it is they who will be responsible for the loss of it. Too dim witted to realize they are the pawns used by those who wish to abolish freedom in our country. The temper tantrums of neophyte anarchists who will surely be stamped out in time by people who have the real power. How can they not realize they are the pawns, the cattle, the fools not willing to think long enough to connect the dots to see, that it isn't the police who are the bad guys but certain people who are inherently bad. That they exist everywhere in every institution waiting to predatorily pounce on those who they see as weak. To feeble minded to see that the media is only there to stoke their anger and hatred between those who have superficial differences between one another. Police brutality is wrong and the color of the afflicted's skin has nothing to do with it.

The dialog at the 36 minute mark. It's the dogma of leftists the world-over. The society depicted here is the globalists wet-dream, what they've worked so hard in 2020 to achieve. People conditioned, in this case with drugs, to suppress their humanity in favor of "unity" and "peace" with the tradeoff, of course, being freedom, humanity, and one's God-given rights. The indoctrination is non-stop in the movie, just how the media operates today with any given "approved" message (can you say COVID-19, or our "airtight" elections ? just to name a few), regardless of what the facts may be. Don't question it. Just censor yourself. And if you don't, others will do it for you, even to the point of destroying your life in the process.

After a third world war devastates the Earth people come up with a new totalitarian state that regulates human expression claiming that is the only way to ensure stability and prevent another war. Clerics who are more like super warriors are established to monitor society and the population is drugged to suppress their emotions. The story is a classic one of how a government’s attempt to control people’s minds always leads to resistance.
The movie lays out how oppressive the government is and how the clerics enforce the system at the start. Preston is presented as a torn soul. He killed both his wife and his boss which leads to nightmares. It’s those types of emotions that the government fears and will lead him to question the status quo. The idea is that if people think and express their free will they will eventually turn on any system that is out to control them.
Interspersed with Preston’s soul searching are some very elaborate fight scenes. The clerics for instance have their own fighting style and Preston gets to show it off several times taking down a slew of people in the process.
The story is interesting, the action is good but there is just something missing from the story to fully draw in the audience and make it great.

Equilibrium is a 2002 American science fiction action film written and directed by Kurt Wimmer, and starring Christian Bale, Emily Watson, and Taye Diggs.
The film follows John Preston (Bale), an enforcement officer in a future in which feelings and artistic expression are outlawed and citizens take daily injections of drugs to suppress their emotions. After accidentally missing a dose, Preston begins to experience emotions, which makes him question his morality and moderate his actions while attempting to remain undetected by the suspicious society in which he lives. Ultimately, he aids a resistance movement using advanced martial arts, which he was taught by the regime he is helping to overthrow.
The concept of suppressing knowledge and emotions isn't new in media, but this film is refreshing and handles these themes in a way that is original; the audience is given the context of this regime, so, from the beginning the would-be antagonist are garnished with some sympathy. in addition to this, confusion about this reality is avoided because there is a logical explanation for how beings in this world are able to live without their emotions (they take a daily serum). The simplicity of it all (considering the concept is rather heavy) is easy to appreciate and makes 'Equilibrium' that much easier to digest.
Preston's character development throughout the film leaves much to be desired, but this is forgivable given the plot and its subsequent expectations. From the very beginning we are told that Preston has a reputation for being relentlessly compliant and that he is completely void of emotion; as one-noted as this might seem, this an ingenious set up for quick changes that don't need a lot of explanation or story-telling that can be exhaustive. It doesn't take brainpower to understand how a man that doesn't have feelings can be a completely different person once they have the ability to feel - which only helps to turn the complex nature of this film in-to a gift-wrapped sensation that anyone can enjoy.
Lastly, there is a distinct juxtaposition between scenes that are chaotic versus controlled that makes 'Equilibrium' a real work of art. In some moments the characters move (and shoot, there is a lot of shooting!) sporadically and there isn't any real rhyme or reason for their behavior beyond simply bureaucratic and senseless expectations. In contrast to this, there are scenes that are clearly choreographed to be visually appealing, and they are a nice break from violence and action that lacks discretion and can be ultimately hard to understand as justified.
An underrated film that handles complexity with grace - I would recommend!

First Christian Bale movie I'd ever seen
Saw the quote about The Matrix on the front and just had to see it - may not make me forget about The Matrix, but this movie definitely holds its own
What I liked most: John Wick isn't the only one to care this much about a dog
What I liked least: Hypocrisy just always rubs me the wrong way, and this takes it to a new level

Good film. Still cropped like the original UK Blu-Ray release.

This is second time I've bought this film. Reading the back of the case it says Aspect ratio 16:9 (Original Aspect ratio 2.35:1) Which made me think, oh finally this is the original anamorphic version. Well, its not. Its the same version from the last version of this film when it originally came out on Blu-ray. I could instantly tell this by the image on the disc and its exactly the same as what's on the front cover of the original Blu-ray release. This is just some sort re-issue and the image is still cropped to 1.75:1. Its exactly the same release, but with a different front cover. Why? Don't know. Guess we will never get the original 2.35:1 version here in the UK.

this is one of the (better) movies you don't know if you are not into movies, with Christian Bale (at least known since batman :-). About the story you can read by your own. One thing you should know is that responsible for this movie is Kurt Wimmer... who? ... he also created Ultraviolet -> before you stop reading because of mentioning Ultraviolet :-) try to get Ultraviolet in the extended version the cut version killed this (great) movie. So now you have two movies to watch :-)

A great film you might not of heard of

I didn't know this film existed until I stumbled across it while trying to find a film to watch on TV one night (same as Repo Men), it turned out to be pretty good and slightly different from the norm, I would've preferred on Bluray but could only find on DVD. If you like dystopian future films with a twist I'd recommend giving it go.

Grim but very watchable

I bought this on a recommendation and was very impressed. One of those movies where small details count, even they seem irrelevant to begin with. Dark brooding atmospheres and great acting make this grim vision of the future very watchable, even if the content is chilling and forbidding.
I would recommend this movie for all lovers of dystopian dramas. It draws the viewer into the nightmare world where even a stray thought or emotion could get you into serious trouble with the law.

This is one of my favourite films! I love a film with Christian Bale because his acting range is brilliant. I also love dystopian futures or worlds and so this checked the box for me. It was a very good action packed film with a great underlying story.
