This movie is so good. There are many who say it's not, but I just don't understand them. The story line is good, the CG is good and the acting is good. Just sit back and enjoy the movie for what it is. A movie about a young boy who finds a dragon egg and his whole life changes.

I have not read the books associated with this film so I'm in a good position to evaluate the film on its own merit. Clearly people are all over the place with this film (from one star to five stars and everything in between) and I can detect without difficulty that many folks feel strongly about the movie either one way or another.
THE STORY: This film manifests your basic "good versus evil" theme. A malevolent despot king rules the land but he has one fear -- that a "dragonrider" (and a dragon) will reappear to ultimately dethrone and destroy him. This nasty king has a powerful wizard of sorts, ready at his beck and call to deliver on his evil plans. The wizard rules over a really nasty pack of dreadful pseudo-humans who possess magical powers and skills.
But the dragonrider, Eragon, and his female dragon, Saphira, also utilize magic to do battle with the bad guys. Various mentors and allies come along to guide and aid Eragon and, of course, there is a culmination of the two factions in a Battle Royal. The film's conclusion clearly leaves the way open for the sequel film.
Let me say up front that this is a fine fantasy film, lots of action, a good story, superb cinematography, and great acting. What I detected was a number of "film techniques" (for lack of a better phrase) which mirrored the action in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy: The Lord of the Rings - The Motion Picture Trilogy (Platinum Series Special Extended Edition) .
I realize that they are the same sort of story and that "Eragon" may, in fact, soon turn into a series of films like LOTRs; however, at every turn I kept finding myself reliving scenes from LOTRs so I was just a tiny bit distracted by this.
The huge bulk of complaints that I see on this film (especially at IMDB) is that the books are purportedly so much better than the film. Well, when was this not true in the case of nearly any film which had its genesis in a book? So I therefore discount much of this facet of criticism, even though it may be true. I felt the same way about LOTRs but this diminution of excellence from book to film was a personal expectation -- as a consequence, I was not disappointed when I viewed the film trilogy.
So here are my recommendations: if you have read the books and feel strongly that the film will be a weak second, then don't watch it. But if you've never read the books and you want to see a fine film (even if it borrows a bit in technique from LOTRs), then I think that you'll enjoy this one.
The Special Edition version contains a second disc -- here's what you'll find on it:
-- audio commentary with Director Stefen Fangmeier.
-- extended and deleted scenes with optional director's commentary.
-- "Inside the Inheritance Trilogy": "The Magic of Eragon" documentary.
-- "Eldest" -- the first two chapters of the second book in the "Inheritance Trilogy".
-- "The Inhabitants of Alagaësia" character featurettes.
-- Arya's Ambush original animatic sequence with optional director's commentary.
-- Vision of Eragon conceptual art gallery.
-- pronunciation guide.
-- original and unused storyboard galleries.
-- Christopher Paolini interview.
-- "The Secrets of Alagaësia" visual effects featurette.
-- Saphira's animation guide CGI featurette with director's commentary.
-- original teaser and trailer
This 2006 film is in widescreen and runs a total of 103 minutes.

The book was incredible: well written with incredible depth and history like the best epic fantasies. The movie is a poor attempt to capture the magic of the book on a shoestring budget. Although I enjoyed the actors who played Eragon and Bram, the movie itself took too many liberties and missed too many key parts. Read the book or listen to the audiobook instead.

I don't know why this film is categorized as a science-fiction. It feels a lot more like an action adventure fantasy film to me. I think this film is suitable to be watched by parents and children together, as there are no obscene/expletive words, no excessive blood/carnage, no nudity and/or adult sensual/sexual scenes and innuendos, and no troubling messages. There are limited killing/dying/wounded scenes, but those lasted very briefly and do not seem to be visually disturbing. I have not read the book/s, and I came to watch this film without much expectations or mindset to compare and contrast with other action adventure fantasy films. However, I do feel disappointed with some of the dialogues that felt too predictable, simplistic, and at times redundant. There are also several segments that should have been edited out or segments that should not even be shown at all. Yes, there are definitely other action adventure fantasy films better and stronger than this film, but more often than not, those better/stronger films have higher budgets, better casts, stronger planning and preparations, more brutality/violence, realism, and "troubling" messages, etc. Some of the more notable aspects of this film include, the lighting, the CGI and special effects, and the costumes. This film is not among the best, but definitely not among the worst. I can imagine myself watching this as a parent with my adolescent kid, just chilling, spending a bit of quality time with my kid (or I can just go out and take my kid for an outdoor activity).

eragon: read the book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 10, 2010
Eragon is a film adaption of a book, and as such will obviously deviate from the source. Imagine the film Stardust but combined with Lord of the Rings, and you get Eragon.
Firstly, the acting is a tad off being good, but it isn't terrible. Some good scenes, then corny, one liners that should never be in a film with high hopes.
As mentioned by others the special effects are convincing and make it an interesting film to watch, especially the dragons themselves.
However, you would be better off reading the book, which is more magical and inticing. The film seems hollow once you've read the book, which fills the gaping holes in the film, and give a better pace to the story. Plus, the books have sequels; the film does not.
The film is quick paced (in a bad way), unorganic in some parts and there's little originality that the film conveys to the audience.
Worth it for the price, but no guarantee you'll want to see it again.
Personally, the price as well as the need to see it once is the main reason i bought it.
Overall 7/10

Good, entertaining film

Most will be aware of the storyline of this DVD, it having been on TV a few times. While it may not be a blockbuster, it is a good film. It gives the viewer a good dose of fantasy in this world of myth and magic. Eragon is a well made film that is enthralling and entertaining.
I've not read the book so this was like learning the story first-hand, with nothing to compare it too. I found it a very enjoyable film that's easy to watch more than once.
Arrived from Amazon (DiskGiant) within days of ordering. Top marks.

Wonderful film - it's strange

Wonderful film - it's strange, frightening and beautiful, from the moment when he finds the dragon egg, and has the problems of keeping his young dragon safe from discovery until she is old enough to care for herself, then the relationship between them, as she grows, and he realizes that she has her own personality - very human, even though she is a huge winged creature, and he learns the responsibilities of having magic powers which can go seriously wrong if he uses one word out of place.

Bad movie,

This is a terrible movie. Poor script and direction, can't be redeemed by names like Jeremy Irons, nor by the -admittedly very good- digital dragon.
Bought it for boys who like knights and dragons, but it's too violent and scary. Would NOT recommend it for young audiences. As for adults, well, there are better ways to waste one's time or money....
